Still in pain

Hi

. I fractured my 2nd 3rd and 4th metatarsal 10 days ago, I went to the fracture clinic to get my cast, it has got a bit loose but still feels secure, i am still in a lot of pain and find myself taking the same amount of painkillers as when it happened first. Is this normal to be in pain 10 days after the injury with the hard cast on? Or should i go to my GP?

Thanks

Siobhán

Wise to get checked out

I would go check it out with the doctor.

Here's my experience. I broke my 3rd metatarsal, a stress fracture. I did it the last week of October, because of the swelling, they didn't find the break until January. The swelling held everything in place. How it was explained to me, when it was swelled, everything was held in place. As the swelling goes down, there's not as much support and it hurts. Hopefully this is all it is, the swelling going down and there's more movement (even in a cast). I'd check it out though.. Good luck.

Hi

Sooo i didn't do anything about the pain and just waited for my follow up appointment.. turns out once the swelling went down a bit they could see in the new x-ray i had a lot more damage done, so here i am in the trauma ward waiting for a CT scan and possible surgery tomorrow with a pump in my new cast to help the rest of the swelling go down..... What. The. Hell!!!

Siobhán

Oh poor you, what were the results of your scan hope it was god news.

Thanks

im still waiting for the results, they sent them to a specialist in another hospital so still don't know if im gonna have surgery or not, my bones aren't displaced so im as confused as ever!!

Eeekk

Siobhan

Have you had any more advice yet. Hoping it's positive

Hi

I had the CT and it showed that the ligaments are very badly sprained and not torn as 1st thought. So along with my my multiple fractures and badly sprained ligaments im on complete non weight bearing for 3 months.

I was let home today and have to go back for an x-ray this Thursday to see if the metatarsal's have started to join, because there not doing it yet. Im not out of the surgical wood yet!!

Siobhan

Good news on the ligaments, seems that they are going to follow your progress well, let's hope for good news re x-rays on Thursday.

Ya im hoping the x-ray will show good news. It feels like the swelling is gone, but now i have awful pain in my foot, the pain all over and on the sole of my foot and not just at the break where i had pain when my accident happened 1st.

Im thinking because the swelling is gone down that's why i have more pain..

Thursday can't come quick enough

Good luck

so had my check up. I'm in a non weight bearing cast for 6 weeks so that's not as bad as the 3 months as 1st told. My bones aren't joining yet so ill know after my 6 week x-ray if i need pins or not.

The reason i have sharp stabbing pain now is because the swelling is gone down and the ligaments and tendons are badly sprained.

Siobhan.

Well not as bad as you expected so hopefully 6 weeks of mending will do the trick. How are you finding the cast?

Ya hopefully now. I'm gonna keep it immobilised as much as I can. The cast is annoying i'll be honest, especially at night when im get leg cramps.

The joys of it eh!

Bless you at least I can take my boot walker off at night the relief is immense. It will be all worth it. Immobilizing your foot in a cast will give tendons, ligaments and bones the best chance of healing with hopefully no more intervention.
