still sore knee.

Hi all

im 7 weeks post op tkr im out and about and driving but im still getting a bit of pain in the left side of my knee its also quite numb on that side as well is this about normal for the time i am at post op any help appreciated.

Hi johnny, I have the same numbness on the side of both of my knees after the surgery and I'm 7 months on l and 6 months on r. My surgeon told me this is normal and u may or may not get the feeling back again but it doesn't effect your mobility. It's a wait and see if was told

Hi Cookiefl

Thanks for the advice i wasn't to sure im not due to go back to see my surgeon until December i suppose im not being as patient as i should be.

cheers.

Hi! They told me the numbness is normal, and that feeling could come back, it it may never. It depends on whether the nerves are meeting correctly after being put back together. Not sure about the pain, but I'm 10 weeks out, and still have pain, so I'm sure some pain is.normal.

Thanks michelle.

Yw it's all new to all of us so all the helpful info we all can share is the best for everyone's recovery

Sure is this was the place i found out all the good and bad things lol they dont warn us about before th op

Oh geez, it is still very early at 7 weeks I had that and more! I am now 4 months and doing much better but I still have days I do too much and pay dearly for it. It doesn't help that I have a bad hip on same side. I have days that my knee feels almost normal but also days it gets all kinds of little pains in it. Be patient, easier said than done but it is a slow recovery, you will get there.

Hi Peggy

thanks for the advice i know i get ahead of myself im just going to stick to my original target to be playing golf by march 17 lol.

Hi Johnny,

I'm a year out from bilateral tkr's and still have some discomfort and numbness on the outside of both knees.  It's a strange feeling hey?  Like the knees asleep without the cramping.  I'm not sure if it's this is how it will be from now on.  Me guessing though, a year has gone by and this is how it will probably be.  Some people heal better though so don't take my word for it but when all the nerves are cut for the operation, it would take a miracle for all of them to knit back.

good luck with it all.

I'm a week behind you in this journey and I have the same problem. We're at the beginning of this marathon. The more excersise and ice we do and elevation with help. The numbness could be due to swelling.  Good luck with your recovery .. I'm also doing hydrotherapy twice a week. That gas been great.

HiSue

i think your right its just a matter of time tough as it is but hopefully we will all get there in the end.

Keep saying i will get to the pool but by the time im home from work i just want to rest need to get my bum in gear lol.

You're amazing being back at work! Good on you but I guess that's the reality of life. It costs so much for the time off work that we need to return to the reality.  I have started back at work, hairdressing... So that's on my feet and standing behind the chair. It's a home business so I've just started two days and a few hours morning, then excersise, rest then ice and elevation.  Ready for the late afternoon early evening block.  I guess it's all trial and error.  I just couldn't sit for a long time and found that my s Katich was pinched. Lucky I knew a great Physio

Thank you

You are doing really well yourself on your feet all day make sure you dont over do it your recovery is more important but as you say we have to work thanks for your comment take care.

johnny.

A TKR is quite a major procedure and takes time to recover from . Imagine having your leg broken , it wont heal overnight . Keep up with the physio and it will improve . I had my TKAs 18 & 16 years ago and have no problems at all now . You may think it wont improve but it will .

Hi David,

When does your doctor predict you will have to have them replaced again?

Michelle

My last check up was 2 years ago , surgeon said they are lasting well could be up to 10 years with luck . The replacments are improvimg all the time . When I had my first one the average was expected to be 10 to 15 years , but with a good surgeon and proper care they last much longer . I am 75 and don't expect to have them replaced , and I'm not planning on dying anytime in the near future .

Nice! Happy to hear that! I just had my right knee done in August, but I'm only 46 so I'm thinking it will have to be done again some day. Who knows what they will be like then though?

Look after them keep up the physio , even if it is painful . Don't take part in activities that cause impact to your knee , like jogging & skiing etc .
