Still weak

I had my right hip replacement 14 months ago and my left replacement 8 months ago. they were both done posterior approach with great results but I'm still not physically back to where I was before my hips got bad. I was off my feet for most of 1 1/2 years so that may be contributing to my delayed recovery. I can put my right sock on but still need my grabber to put on my left. I did recently got a job that requires me to be on my feet all day and while my feet and lower back have been sore at the end of the day, my hips are doing great. Worked 3 days in a row after not working for almost 2 years. I can walk well but not as fast as my children, they had a hard time keeping up with me 3 years ago. I used to hike in the mountains, my last hike was 16 miles in 2014. Now it is a victory when I walk up the stairs without using the handrail. Anyone else experiencing a delayed recovery like this? I'm 48 years old.

Hi Chris Going back to work after not working for 2 years is brilliant and it's not surprising you are sore after work. You just need to take your time and do some muscle building exercises around your hip. A physio would probably beable to advise better. My hip can be stiff some days and can struggle putting my socks on. So take it easy, continue to do the exercises they gave you after the op.

My physio also suggested sports massage as scar tissue can cause stiffness and this will help with your flexibility.  I hope this helps and gopd luck with your recovery.

Dear Chrisr

I had both hips done in March which is nearly 3 months ago.  I am still in a lot of pain and have to take my pain medication at least 4 times a day, and that doesn;t take the pain away immediately.  It feel like my liegs are very heavy and they are very painful at the site of surgery.  I read of people back to work of walking miles a day at 2 months but I cannot see myself doing that  for a good while.  My dioctor wants to see me about my pain medicatiion I think to a vew of reducing it which worries me greatly as I am just about managing the pain now!  I wonder like you how much longer will it be before I feel able to do the things I did before the operation.  I am also very tired and have to lay down during the day which is something I didn't do before I wonder what makes me so tired.  I know we are all different but I wish I could feel better.  I wish you  speedy recovery

Dear Chris

Seems odd that you are not more recovered by now. What does being on your feet all day amount to? What is the reason you feel you need to use the hand rail to go up the stairs!

Cheers Richard

Hi Chris. Sounds like you're doing brilliantly. Two major ops takes a lot out of one. And working on your feet? Huge deal. Just one suggestion. If you're not working on your core, maybe check out some exercises. I am much older than you but i find my lower back gets quite sore. Continue with the great progresd.....

Morning Chris from San Antonio Texas!! Sounds like you are doing pretty good considering you were out for almost 2 years!! And yes those years of not moving your hip does take time to recover. I'm almost 10 months out I still have to use a cane I always use handrails to go up and down stairs one leg at a time! I dislocated my first hip replacement and had to have a total hip revision 3 weeks later. Then my dr put me on strict orders of no weight bearing, no hip exercises or hip flexion past 80 degrees for 6 weeks. THAT plus being almost 2 inches short, (dr gave me almost all my length back) and the muscles that had been short and not used or used properly are now not very happy along with tendons, tissue and nerves. A very big operation that we go through some of us have been through some very trying ordeals. Otherds are doing great!! I'm sure with time all will be ok. But I know when you were active prior to all this it does make one feel helpless. I still struggle and now dealing with nerve pain....I find myself in bed every afternoon cause I got to get off my feet because of the sensitivity of my thigh. I can't tie or dry my foot. I'm still using the sock aid. I'm now able to put my pants on without using the grabber. Every now and then my lower back acts up and I can't bend even the slightest because of pain. I feel my recovery is going at a snails pace. But you are doing pretty well. Just be patient!! Oh by the way I'm 54. Wishing you all the best and God's blessings to you. Hugs 🤗LD

It's a summer job at a tourist attraction. One day I was "Merlin" the wizard in "Merlins Mystical Mansion ". Another day I was checking hand stamps. Standing all day except for lunch, not much walking at all.

Sometimes my legs seem too weak for me to walk upstairs without using the handrail. I think part of that might be because of my weight gain while being off my feet. I am losing weight and getting stronger but sometimes my thighs just don't have what it takes.

Dear Chris

It sounds to me that you would be making better progress if your working day had more walking and less standing.

Cheers

Richard

I take what I can get. I applied for a job in park services which would have involved walking around all day sweeping up trash. Since I lost my job almost 2 years ago because of my hips and haven't worked since they didn't want to take the chance that I couldn't handle it so they offered me the job I have now.

The other options around here for the summer would be scooping ice cream or washing dishes.

Dear Chris

I do understand but if you can work it that you can move about rather than standing in one spot I think you would be doing yourself a favour.

Good luck

Richard

Good suggestion. I haven't worked on my core at all and my back gets sore also.
