I had a Nissen fundoplication about 20 years ago and have had nothing but severe bloating at night ever since it keeps me awake or waking me up all night long
it’s a dull pain and my stomach wants to burp but I can't it hits a road block when it gets to my esophagus and it turns into a hiccup I was wondering if I had my esophagus dilated with one of those balloon things they us to enlarge would help.
I talked to my gastroenterologist and he is not much help, in fact, none of them have, seen many over the years ideally I would like to have it taken down but he said I would never find a surgeon willing to do it, if this was done my problems would be over as I would be able to burp and not have the gas bloating problem.
since they won't do that I was thinking the balloon dilation might help any thoughts on that.
The Nissen fundoplication was the absolute worst thing, never had a proper nights sleep
since
I have to take Gaviscon at bedtime then Nexium, sometimes Zantac every 2 hours
It was too easy getting the Nissen fundoplication done impossible to get it undone
they tell me it can't be undone because of the scarring but in a life and death case like mine I think it can be undone.I would be willing to go anywhere and pay for the procedure it could not cost that much.
Thanks for listening
Maybe try going private. If a procedure can be done. it can be undone. No one wants to take risks these days. Keep, insisting and change your doctor until you get someone to listen to your concerns. Tell them the procedure has not worked and your quality of life has worsened and that scarring is the least of your worries. You were probably better off taking antacids instead of having surgery in the first place. Were you properly informed of the risks of having this procedure?
Thanks for your reply we only have 2 gastroenterologists in my area and it’s 9 month wait time
I have seen them all.
I was told I would not be able to burp and since I hardly burped anyway I was not concerned but I did not expect the painful bloat preventing me from getting a night’s sleep every night
I dread bedtime I lay there in pain and no way to exhaust the gas my stomach goes thru the motions of trying to burp but can’t I can sometimes do it rectally that’s the only relief
What I didn’t expect was that it has turned my esophagus into a one-way valve and does not vent anything, if you think that the esophagus does not vent be close to somebody that has eaten curry or garlic.
It was a disaster from the start I went back and tried to get the surgeon to undo it he was not receptive and said if he had to do it, it would be the open method that has a 4-5 month recovery as opposed to laparoscopic surgery you can be back to work in a week he said that to put me off and it worked thinking it would get better he said it’s early days yet
Over the years it has got worse and getting worse I am now 70 and it’s taken its toll on me with the lack of sleep.
The scarring in on the Fundos wrap internally from the surgery it’s simple if it’s undone sooner than later but I have read it can still be undone.
I live in Canada which has a national health system so it works to benefit the masses and they won’t do it.
If you hammered a piece of wood into your car exhaust pipe see what happens
We have a national health service in Great Britain which is isn't all that great either. Definitely keep pushing for removal of the procedure. Doctors tend only to do what suits them and forget about what would suit the oatient.
