stomach problems

Don't know whether this is connected but I am 4 weeks post tkr and have started having really bad stomach pains and horrendous

trapped wind. I'm wondering could this be due to all the things we have had pumped into us, . Has anyone else had this. X

Hi I've had loads of different surgerys , the anasthetic , very often can give you awful wind , I can't remember how long it goes on for , but obviously it much depends on your daily movements , activity so hard to say, but if it is still carrying on in another week, go and see your gp. You've been through a lot already, so don't mess about to long waiting to see if it goes or not, the gp will be able to put your mind at rest straight away.😉

Is it possible to call the surgery and talk to the practice nurse? Or if you're really concerned try a walk in centre, assuming you're in England. I would think the amount of different Meds we take early on could be having an effect. You could try googling your Meds see if any can have an effect on the stomach. I know I'm suffering with a bit of constipation at the moment which can be painfull with wind.  I'm assuming it's the side effect from the codeine which is noted for this. Hope you find relief soon.

Build up of pain meds can cause some of this. The entire digestive system slows down and doesn't start moving again. You might try colase and mirilax for 2 or e days in arow a d as soon as the system rebounds use every 2-=3 days as long a s y o u are taking pain meds. Again...lots of fluids tk go with it.

If you are taking any form of antiinflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen etc, they can have strong side effects on your stomach and it's probably a good idea to take a proton inhibitor drug such as imeprazole, to protect the stomach lining - you could ask your GP about this?

No, not me. . poor you! . .just wonder if you could have changed your diet since the op?   otherwise all the things other people mention .  .Hope you get it sorted. it's enough to cope with the knee, without any other problems!

Joan , if you haven't had your bowels open, and you aren't passing wind with abdominal pain you may well have a blockage due to the medications you have been taking. My mother in law had this happen and had to have bowel surgery straight after her knee, so do get it checked early better than later. Let me know how you go. Good luck.xx

Hi Joan,   am 4 weeks today, i to get stomach pains ,   its all down to the meds we all take, i also have the toilet problem, and its very very painful, so make sure you take some sort of laxatice  to help, and as someone has posted  you do need to take some sort of medication to put a lining on your stomach. Hope your problem gets sorted and your recovery is quick

Thank you Brian. I have had the doctor today. Last night I was

sick three times. I have got a stomach bug to add to my list. I

feel weak as a kitten. Like you say it's down to the medication.

Joan were you able to ask about my concern, as my mother In law was sick also as nothing could go through due  to her blockage. I hope they have ruled this out of you. Im very worried..take care I hope you feel better soon..

Didn't the : give you anything for a few days post op? My dr ordered a milk of magnesia the entire hospitL stay. You definately need to get this corrected asap, not only for comfort but for medical concerns.

Sorry, have no idea where tge hell the smikey face came from. Not a laughing matter. Just picked up a new phone and havent learned all of it craziness

Hi Joan,

i think everyone's comments a valuable and right I had that up to 4 weeks and was due to meds taking  and the anaesthetic still in the system, my bowel movement was ok bit painful at times but within the next 2 weeks it was a huge improvement. I'm know 6 weeks post TKR and still pass little wind but vast improvement..

i would monitor the next 1-2 weeks but if you are seeing no improvement go see you GP or phone the surgeon as per Mary's comments I've heard the same thing re going back to get the bowers fixed.

How are you doing now Joan ?

Hi Mary feeling a lot better thank you. I think it was the tablets. I decided to cut them down yesterday but big mistake. Last night. I was in agony so had to take them. Seems you can't win whatever you do. I think patience is what's needed and I struggle with that wanting to be right.

Yes Joan , we have an agenda but our bodies have a totally different one.

glad you are feeling a little better.
