I twisted my left ankle twice in the space of two months. Both times I was sprinting. The first time I twisted it outward, the second time inward (the medial side). The second instance was worse. My ankle was in pain and utterly weak for over 10 months. I was freelancing and had no insurance. I did not get a scan or X ray until 6 months after. Did not apply ice. In short, poor injury management.
I began stretching and strengthening after the pain subsided. For a long while I couldn’t stretch since the pain got worse. I began running again about 3 months back, and I’m also playing ultimate frisbee again (been 2 months since my return).
I don’t have pain on the ankle, but there is a lot of pain above the medial malleolus. Sometimes when I sprint, the pain stops me instantly. Can’t bear weight for 3-4 days, and can’t sprint for 2 weeks. Same happens when I land on the ball of my left foot after a jump.
I’ve been working on my ankle and the medial area above the malleolous. Any idea what this could be? I know I have managed this injury poorly, but I’m curious: is this natural for a poorly managed injury? Or is this a stress fracture/reaction?
