Strnge feeling in new hip on going up stairs

After an accident I am now the proud (?) owner of a new hip. I had a fractured and displaced neck of femur and 12 weeks ago had an Exeter cemented total hip replacement.

I am now getting out , walking short distances with 1 sick ( no stick round the house) going on buses.

I am aged 74 but was very fit, able to walk at least 5 miles ,up and down hills so am quite frustrated and impatient.

I am doing the exercises regularly and due to attend the hospital physio soon for a 6 week course.

My only querie is that on trying to go upstairs in the normal way I get a strange, almost grinding, feeling in my hip with no pain. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

I'm 11 weeks post op and I noticed some noises and strange feelings while I was doing my exercises in the pool last week. I emailed my surgeon and he said some noises and adjustments of the joint without pain is normal but if there's pain with the noises or adjustments, I need to see him because that's not supposed to happen.

It's probably just normal adjustments as everything heals but if it causes pain or makes you feel unstable, it may be worth a call to the doctor.

I'm further on - 17 weeks - and because I am waiting for a TKR I've been using my new hip to do all the work on stairs because my knee complains at anything much bigger than a kerb and flatly refuses to go down anything bigger.  I occasionally get a feeling of 'clunk' which I think is due to the muscles still not being fully tightened up but I am still working on it. It doesn't hurt and usually happens when the hip is only slightly bent so at the moment I am taking it as one of those things. But I am going in for a knee replacement in a month or so and if it is still doing that at 6 week follow-up then I'll mention it.

I think I would mention it to the physio. I still use two crutches on buses as I find them easier than sticks and the drivers usually let me sit down before they move off! I need the two in case the drivers can't get into the kerb and I have to drop the full distance down to the road.

I never had any grinding in my hips while maneuvering on stairs.

Of course everyone is different... This might be something to call the dr office about ask the nurse.. They will get back to u and verify any issues. U sound like UR r doing well so from UR description on UR great recovery above I really see no problem for u..

PT IS always a great way to go. Good luck to more improvement for u up and down those hills.

Thanks,Cindy. Perhaps I am being impatient. I have no pain just the weird sensation , so I will give the hip a bit more time.

Thanks Ros, from reading replies it strikes me that everyone heals at different rates. I'll give myself more time but will contact Physios if it does not improve over the next few days.

Thanks, all the replies give me that I will feel normal again soon. All my friends and family keep telling me I am doing so well, bit I don't know really how I should be doing. I suppose that I am still getting over the trauma of the accident.

Hi Anne

My situation isnt quite the same but thought I would tell you anyway.

I had my 2nd THR at the end of January.......4 weeks into my recovery I was doing one of their exercises and heard a crack {loud one !!} that leg collapsed and i was taken into hospital......after an X Ray they said that I had fractured the  greater trochanter bone Nothing they could do about it, it would heal itself but would take a long time......well 4 and a half months on from the fracture I'm using 2 crutches outside for longish distances, one for shorter distances and none in the house but I'm still waddling....not walking  Anyway to get to the point.......I've been hearing a CLUNK certain ways I move my leg when sitting.....Crossing them {I kow I know!!!! shouldnt be doing that LOL} and some other times.......No pain like you say. I saw the consultant for a check up earlier in the week and mentioned this, he looked at the x ray, everything is OK then he said do you have pain when that happens? No Then dont worry about it.

So it doesnt sound as if you have any thing to worry about judging by the other posts as well

Love

Eileen

Thanks Eileen, it is good to talk to other people having THR. I do hope that you continue to recover and I will try not to worry and relax a bit more. I find myself getting very frustrated because until the accident my hip was ok. Remember...do not cross those legs lol and all the best.

Oh Anne    I get so frustrated as well.......its because this fracture is acute ...not chronic and I expect it to get better    Patience is not my middle name LOL

At about 6 weeks post op I was miserable and not progressing nearly as well as I had hoped so I sent my surgeon an email at 2:00 a.m. asking him for a prescription for patience. Needless to say, I never got the call telling me that prescription was ready to be picked up but hey, it never hurts to ask. 😁

That really made me chuckle. Now I know that I am not alone out there I will just be patient and revert to the old optimist that I have always been!

Hi Anne

That sounds like a good plan
