Struggling on 20mg

I’ve been on 20mg for the last year and this has helped me hugely. So busy the other morning i forgot to take a dose but remembered later in the day. However, I have had a terrible few days with depression and suicidal thoughts. Is that related to my skipped dose? I’m really struggling to cope at work where i am under extreme pressure. Xmas in primary education is always busy and I’ve been doing it for nearly 30 years. Times are changing though and I’ve been subjected to the most awful harassment by parents, unrealistic demands, I could go on. In addition there has been a family rift between ourselves and my sister in law over Xmas. All typical I know but I just cant cope. I feel worthless. I have been contemplating suicide and the only thing that has stopped me is my 12 year old son. My husband is away at the moment caring for my mother in law who has just been discharged following a mastectomy but will be home later. He wants to get me to the GP on Monday. The NHS is struggling at this time of year so I doubt I’ll get an appointment. Don’t know what to do.

Hi Sally, whenever I forgot to take a dose (20mg), I also had bad symptoms which started to settle after 3 days, infact, I had to make sure that I took it the exact same time every day. I completely agree with your husband to see a GP as soon as possible, you could call them first thing for an emergency appointment or telephone appointment am assuming you are in the UK. Focus on your 12 year old son to keep you strong, and try to take some time out from the stress, I also have a stressful job and used to work many hours to cope and it got too much, so I have had to change my mindset and do the best I can, it has helped but its something I have to keep working on. Let us know how you get on.

hello, when you realised later in the day, i presume you took your dose that day? it might be being late causing your issues, but suicidal thoughts are a bit of a strong reaction for that alone. think its more likely you need an increase in dose. whatever, see your dr asap.

Hi Sally,
I had missed a dose and I felt extremely anxious and agitated for a couple of days. I think it’s normal to have these feelings. However, it seems as though the pressure from work may be the cause of your relapse. I would contact NHS24…when I was struggling and experienced suicidal thoughts, I was put through to the appropriate DR’s straight away and an appt was arranged for me to see the out of hours. Don’t worry about them being busy, they will help if you are honest and make them fully aware that you can’t wait it out!! I hope you get the support you need.

Hi Sally, How are you feeling today?

Hi Sally, totally get where you’re coming from, also in primary education myself. And taking 10mg cit at the moment.
I have likewise been doing well, but am exhausted this week… and that definitely makes the mood dip.
I think that, although missing a dose can make some of us wobble a bit, you’re probably also just really stressed out. You are under a lot of pressure, and it’s enough to knock anyone, let alone someone suffering from depression. And all the pressure is cutting thru the benefits of the antideps, so to speak.
Do you absolutely have to go into work this next week? Sounds like you could really do with a rest. And are your SMT supportive? Your mental health is the most important thing here. If you need to sign off for a week, the do it. Also you must speak to GP if you’ve been having suicidal thoughts. Especially if you’ve been planning it. Please do seek help, you don’t have to suffer alone.

Hi Paula, thanks for your kind thoughts. My husband is home and with me and we are off to the GP tomorrow. Not sleeping so feel very tired. Have spoken to a very sympathetic colleague. I am about to contact work about my situation. I have been subjected to some very unpleasant bullying which has not been dealt with. I hope my situation will motivate my boss to do something to protect me as I can’t carry on with things as they are. I don’t want to increase my dosage. My colleague thinks I just need time away from the stress. Yes it is the Christmas holidays in 5 days time but Christmas itself will bring stress of another kind. Thank you for your concern.

Hi Sally, I think you are wise not to up the dosage especially as its been helping you. Unfortunately, citalopram on its own cannot solve all our problems, sounds very much like you need a break from work, well worth getting signed off even if you only have 5 days to go. Being bullied at work is really awful and this is going to affect everything, have you thought about going to your HR department? or even emailing them with the help of your husband? am so pleased you have your husband with you.

Thank you Ruth. I’m off to the Drs shortly. Feel completely lacking in energy and struggling to make any decisions. Can’t possibly face work this week.

How did your gp appointment go, Sally? Hope you are OK.

Have been thinking about you too, hope it went well with your doctor.
