I am 27 I got diagnosed with ASD a couple of months ago I have kind of come to terms with the diagnosis but I hate who I am I hate how I act and how I behave ... I understand this is prob to do with the ASD but I hate it and this wish I could be okay with who I am and how I act.
I work full time but I am almost always pretending how I am at work I do find work stressful I pretend I am okay when deep down I am hurting so bad.
I pretend I am okay for so long that often I break down and then feel terrible afterwards much worse then how I felt before.
I was at work today and I had a breakdown things got to much and everything got top of me.
I spoke to my manager and he said he is going to speak to HR on Monday and try and see what they suggest as my manager doesn't really have experience with ASD or borderline personality disorder which I have been diagnosed with in the past I sort of think ASD and BPD are quite similar in themselfs.
My manager suggested I learn self help techniques so I am happier at work it isn't really that easy.
I'm concerned that after my manager has spoken to hr that I will not longer be able to work there as I didn't disclose the BPD when I got offered the job am I going to loose my job because of this ?
I sincerely hope that your firm are sympathetic to your condition.
I am not a medically qualified person but have you ever had your Vitamin B12 and Folate levels checked as there is a link between B12 Deficiency and ASD
Hopefully your boss will be helpful. Maybe if there is a next time, you could only disclose that you have an disability and what your needs would be, instead of givign them the actual diagnosis. Or is it maniditory in order to get help?
I feel it iwll be ok, even if you lose the job. You will find other work. Your health is the most important thing.
Let us know as things progress OK? Hang in there!
Hi
Thank you
I know my vitamin B is low in my body but I'm not sure what vitamins are the lowest.
I don't know if it's mandatory to disclose the diagnosis itself but I feel that is sometimes the best thing to do as that way that know exactly what is wrong with you if they know about the condition.
My boss is going to speak to someone from HR next week and see what they say I hope I am able to keep working there as I don't really want to find a job somewhere else
Can you ask your doctor to test your serum B12 and serum Folate levels if for nothing else but to rule them out as a possible cause/reason for your ASD?
I think this sounds a good idea thank you
Naming diseases adds stigma. all they need to know (unless it is the law of the land to name it) is how it effects you, and how your needs would be best met. There is a LOT of stigma. Be careful with your heart. i have been hurt badly by stigma and would hate to see any others have it. it is very painful to be shunned after you disclose your diagnosis. i wish I never had. but it is up to you. You are a differnt person and I wish you the best.
i hope they let you keep your job without any trouble. it would be the humane thing to do.
Self-help is not a solution! You need a specialist who will help you to manage the signs of ASD. And remember you are not sick. You are just special. With the help of psychocorrection and psychotherapy you will be able to return to a normal happy life!
I don't have the money to do that and the NHS won't help me
Did you look the prices?? Are psychiatric services so expensive in USA???
In U.K. About £200 a session don't live in USA so I have no idea
Can GP really prescribe antideps? My GP reffered me to psychiatrist..btw £200 per session is f.. a lot. 50$ I paid...and I managed this disease. Thanks god
Do you mean anti depressants ?
I don't think off ASD as a disease
I work full time so it's not really severe I just don't really feel normal
I have BPD as well so I have to try and manage the 2 I was under the care of the cmht but I got discharged
not only expencive, there are very few psycatric docs, no one is taking anyone. people with menal health issues are screwed. We are second class citizens in the US.
I paid 50$ per session for psychotherapy. It was online counseling though it worked great. Perhaps I just had luck.
ASD and BPD - are such disorders which you CANNOT have at the same time. You ve' been misdiagnosed.
what kind of treatment did your GP recommend you?
Just courious, how come one cannot have both diagnosis of ASD and BPD?
Hi Sarah, work cannot dismiss you because you have autism, as it is classed as a disability and disability discrimination is illegal in the UK. Also, there is help available on NHS, speak to your GP. If the first one won't help, make an appointment to see a different one and ask again, and again. You will lneed to be persistent. Is there anyone who can help you and attend the appointment with you?
Your manager sounds like he is doing his best - he's asking for guidance because it's a subject with which he is unfamiliar. How did it work out when your manager spoke to HR?
Do work offer counselling? Or have occupational therapists (often, only the big companies do).
There is counselling available. Do look up Autism Westmidlands, there's lots of information on that site about autism. You need to know what your triggers are for meltdowns or shutdowns and what strategies help - the more you know, the better you will be able to spot when something is building up and be able to diffuse it. Sensory overload is often a trigger.
A simple idea that might help...go for a walk outside on your own at lunchtime. Also, do you have the chance to book a study room at work to beon your own when it all gets too much?
