Hi all,
i was was on a business flight to India and developed severe pain that turned out to be large gallstones and had urgent surgery to remove the gallbladder on Monday. I was discharged on Tuesday and am recovering in my hotel. Surgery went well but the bloating is almost intolerable and I'm very tender. I am supposed to attempt to fly back home on Saturday but am quite concerned, while at the same time not happy with the option of being stuck here alone in a hotel so far from home and anyone I know. Anyone have any insight on flying after surgery? I know I'm only 2 days post op, but trying to gain as much wisdom as I can. Thanks for any insight.
Hi Mike,
So sorry to learn that you're in this predicament! You are wise to be concerned about attempting to return home so soon after surgery. It is a gamble, especially because there are no guarantees that you would be able to get medical attention if you need it in transit. Make no mistake. You've had major surgery.
Most doctors warn their patients not to drive or attempt travel after surgery. I would suggest that you contact the doctor who discharged you and ask about travel restrictions. You should also check with the airlines. If you were to try to travel and something happened, you could also be held liable for costs incurred by the airlines if something happened, and the flight were diverted--if you withheld information that you had just had surgery.
Please know that I am primarily concerned for your safety. And, though you are lonely, you can get medical attention where you are if you need it. Your life is precious! I'm sure that those who care for you would rather that you wait until it was safe to travel.
Best of luck! Please let me know how you get on!
Take Lynda's advice. She has helped me. Check with your surgeon, the airline and your travel insurance. Better to wait a few days even though you're stuck in a strange country than take risks getting home.
You say you're stuck in hotel room? Please make sure you keep moving round as this prevents deep vein thrombosis and help get rid of the gas they use and the anaesthetic.
Good luck
sounds like what i had done, all i can say is dont lift anything heavy or akward,or twist your body, you have only just had surgery so your going to be sore and tender;;,im still very sore after 6 months,;; be good to get home you say, i can understand that, all best,
