Raised toilet seat s 2 if you have toilet up and down
Proper height chair.
Long handled shoe horn
Perching stool
Shower chair
( all these should be supplied by occupational therapy. In this Hosp they referred me to occupational therapy but asked me what I needed. If it hadnt been for this forum and someone who had had the op I wouldn't have had a clue.)
Helping hand should be provided by district nurse..
Bigger panties/boxers and tracks bottoms.
Slip on shoes with good solid bottom for home.
Lace ups for hospital trainers OK.
Meals prepared in advance if living alone.
Someone to stay with you for first week If you're lucky enough .
I also got some ankle length dresses but haven't tried these out yet.
Plenty of pillows.
A tablet /smart phone great for keeping connected with forum especially during the night when everyone else is sleeping .
I'm stuck in hospital for an extra day so have time to do this.
I also have a wee cloth hanbag that I intend to have on my waist for mobile phone.
You will be so much better at home, best of luck Ian +++
Yes can't wait to be able to regulate meals meds etc and no noise when I can sleep. They have been great here but home is best. Butt pain tonight. Did more walking less meds so prob that
hi attractac,
glad to hear you so positive, don't forget a grabber in fact I suggest 2 because you always leave it somewhere after you sit down and ge comfortable!, hope you get home soon x
And new shoes. Add that to your list. It is important that we do not begin walking in the same pattern as before surgery and our shoes wear in that way. New shoes will help you begin your new pattern of walking after the surgery. Sorry you are stuck in the hospital an extra day. My best to you!

Oh yes the grabber! Such an important tool and having more than one helps too! I mastered shaving my surgery leg using the grabber tool and impressed the Occupational Therapist.
New shoes. Didn't know that one. I was going to use old bigger ones.
Grabber !!! The nurse here called it a helping hand but grabber is a better description.
Be very careful with long dresses going upstairs. I love my loose trousers. Xx
Agree there . need to be hoisted up round b**bs. Trousers I have going great for helping lift operated leg unto bed. So may stay in them for a while.
omg!! you shaved your leg with a grabber!! please tell me how Dawn
Also a seat wedge for your chair, so when you sit down it keeps your pelvis inline so your butt doesn't dip down at the back of the seat thus breaking the 90 degree rule, good luck
Lynne.
Shaving was fairly simple actually. I just grabbed the razor tightly close to the blade section and shaved and changed the angle of the razor in the grabber as I went. I soaped up my surgery leg with a soapy wash cloth using the grabber. The grabber is a WONDERFUL tool! However, I did have to adjust mine to make it grab tighter than it did when I first received it.
Strange, in the notes I was given, NOT to shave before surgery was one of the things mentioned. Or were you doing this AFTER your op? I f so,
good on you! Fastening my (velcroed) shoes with my grabber is my highest achievement so far.
Yes, I shaved after and was very very careful because of the blood thinners. Did not want to cut myself!
Don't know if any of you lot were supplied with probably the best invention in the world, a total god send and instantly made a huge difference to my daily life was the gadget for helping to put socks on, no longer having to get myself into awkward positions to get them on. The toilet seat was another god send.
I'm in Ted's which have to be put on by family so no need for sock aid. May need it when teds come off. Yes toilet seats are great just a nuisance when in someone else's home. I forgot to add the most important thing needed post op Patience.
I found wet wipes nice to use to freshen up while in hospital. We were given just one opportunity to have a wash, so yes, wet wipes!
Anna x
Wet wipes useful at home too if like me not allowed to shower till a week after clips out.
I have found this thread really useful. Thanks to all who posted.
It looks like I will need to get a few things. I am already struggling with chairs, cant sit on the sofas anymore, havent been able to for a long time. My op is October so there is plenty of time, still to find put how some of these aids will be provided as I am being operated privately.
Still, this is a great list to have ready.
Thanks
Kristin
