For anaesthetic, it's probably best to go with a (local) nerve block AND a very light general anaesthetic. However, make sure the nerve block doc really knows what he's doing.
Thank you for your reply. He has been told it has to be a
general for this op. we meet the anaesthetist next Wednesday, re op the
following Thursday. The shoulder surgeon is from another hospital,
the reverse is a specialty only for over 70s and the arrangements
are more complicated. We are not in the uk.

I'm 70. 4 weeks post-op. I found sleeping in a bed difficult at first. Consider using a recliner chair. Best of luck to you both. Terry from Toronto.
My husband's Reverse Shoulder Replacement operation
is tomorrow Thursday 24th March.
so far he has had rigorous testing.. Heart tests, lung tests,
vascular tests, arthritis tests, blood tests..not much left to test
really, but a post pneumonia 80year old indicates caution.
He goes into hospital 11am and is scheduled for his op 5.30 at
the earliest. They say it takes a couple of hours, which probably,
as it is a general anaesthetic, means I will only see him the
next day.
I plan to post his progress, as there is little information re Reverse
Shoulder as a first shoulder operation to help pain and aid
flexibility where osteo arthritis and rotator cuff are the problems.
Patients, including my husband, approach this operation fearfully,
because it is not 'common' like hip replacements, and up to now
is a 'last resort' procedure. It is helpful therefore to hear other
people's stories.
We hope for positive results...

I'm 68 and had my surgery at St. Alexian Bros. My surgery was at about 5:15 and got to my room abou 9:30. I saw three doctors the next day with insructions. I'm now about 4 week out and can raise my arm 180 degrees both foward and to the side. The only problem I had was a large hematomia about 4 in. long an a in. wide, this is giving me the most trouble. I keep heat on it as must as possible and its slowly going down. I'll check back in two weights, I hope to start strenegh training soon.
