Sudden abdominal cramps

hi guys, I know a lot about IBS as I've had it since the age of around 13 due to stress and anxiety. For me its usually caused bloating, constipation and occasional pain. the doctor prescribed me mild laxatives and peppermint tablets which began to clear it up.When I noticed it was due to anxiety, i got some counselling and felt like my anxiety had gone for the most part, meaning Ive never even had to think about ibs tablets for around a year now. however, over the last week I've been experiencing severe cramps around 3 times a day, sometimes waking me up at night, either painful trapped wind or needing to run to the toilet with loose stools. I've never really had that before, and although I get anxiety flare ups, I cant say I've felt that anxious at all, especially not enough to cause this. I think its usually an hour after I've eaten or just before bed, but the pain is so sharp and crippling that I usually have to stop what I'm doing and hope it passes. does anyone else have these symptoms with either IBS or a food intolerance? I have a balanced healthy diet but now I'm considering if it's a gluten intolerance, but would it happen that quickly? any help would be much appreciated! thank you 😊

i have this issue been having it for a while now . it comes an goes , mine was also due to having anxiety , here recently my anxiety has came back an so has my ibs i cant eat certain things , i have not had bad anxiety lately but my ibs has still been acting up . hang in there an be careful with the things you eat .

am having this same issue has we speak and i think its because am about to get my period and my anxiety has came back with a vengence, the tummy pain so bad i have to curl up in a ball or run to the washroom once i get there i cant poop and if i do its very little, i want this to pass so bad

Try a food diary. Even healthy foods can be a problem with IBS. Maybe there is something stressing you that you are unaware of? Some hidden anxiety? IBS never really goes away completely. It can die down for months or even years only to come back unexpectedly.

hi rebecca, if your bowel habits suddenly change insist on seeing a doctor and as soon as possible, that’s the advice you’re officially given. my bowel suddenly got really tight last year. i have now been diagnosed with coeliac disease. good luck, i hope you get this sorted.

Hi Rebecca 99923.there is a possible problem to this as you know that what you are eaten may now be working against you so try looking at the Fodmap on the internet and also the web page called the ibs network which i found to be quite useful. Also you can buy or get prescribed Buscopan which i find very good for ibs .Also have you tried any anti depressants like Citrolopram 20 mgs ,asthat help me allot.

hi - are taking any fiber supplements like citrucil?

Everyone is so different this does take some working out.
I get sudden abdominal cramps as well.
I don’t think I have been actually diagnosed with IBS but suspect that I have it.
I also have diverticulitis and am guessing this may be part of the problem.
Food intolerance is really just trial and error.
If you find a certain food starts cramps leave it out for a bit and see what happens.
it is all you can do really.
Take care and keep in touch
Sarah

thank you all so much for your help, I really appreciate it! I’m going to go dairy free for 3 days, gluten free for a few days and just try taking IBS tablets for a few days with a normal diet. I’m also starting counselling again tomorrow which will hopefully help my anxiety. and I’m doing a food diary. so I feel like I’m doing everything I can, it’s just so horrible it’s really getting me down :frowning:

thank you for your help. Did you experience the same symptoms? I’m thinking it might be that but I really hope not!

hello, no I’m not on any tablets or supplements. I haven’t needed to take anything at all for IBS for nearly a year so I’m not sure why the sudden turn in my lower tummy

hello, thank you for your reply. I did read about diverticulitis as I have similar symptoms. did you experience the same symptoms as me, and as sudden as me? also, how does diverticulitis affect your life?

i too also cut out dairy out my diet like lactose free everything is what i drink or eat and if its not lactose free then i dont eat it, also try to cut wheat out your diet i try but its hard cause alot of things has wheat in it, i would advise to try low fodmap diet and get you a dietician that specialize for IBS. have you ever gotten a colonoscopy before ? if not get one done so they can diagnose you

My main symptoms are diarrhoea and sudden abdominal cramps particularly first thing in the morning and after evening meal.
Hope you feel better soon.
Sarah
