Suffering withdrawal symptoms for the last two weeks after I stopped Citalopram

Hi please does anyone ever been prescribed for CITALOPRAM for migraine as I have been prescribed Citalopram (20g) for migraine purposes from my neurology for the last 6 months. Nearly three years suffered migraine every (3/4days)and tried for different medications (toprimate, etc). During those period that I was on yes I felt, less concentration in such lost of sexual desire, weight gain, sleepy and quite careless unproductive. The good news was without any explanations my migraine improved but, I couldn't tolerate enough other downside effects as I am about to graduate psychology degree so I felt I should stop and consulted with my Gp and he told me since I was only taking for the last 6months only I could try to stop completely for a week without reducing the dose. After stopping one week I didn't feel anything and was a bit selfie and overwhelmed to not go back, this is when all the withdrawal symptoms kicks in, (sweaty, easily cry, mood swing, light headless and headaches as well). I am on my second week without Cita but feeling a bit better then the first week and I thought if the withdrawal effect not imporoved for the next week then I should consult with my doctor. I am so glad that I am not the only person have these symptoms. Anyone felt same way let me know please.

Your doctor should be hung, drawn and quartered for suggesting you stop this medication abruptly.  Never, ever do that ... not even after a couple of weeks of taking them.  This is serious medication and to suddenly stop like that can make you very ill.  I took months weaning myself off these and I still got withdrawal effects which lasted a long time.  I doubt the side effects will be gone by week 2.

Ive never heard this medicine has been given for migraine.  In many cases it actually gives you headaches initially.  Maybe they thought you were tense which caused them?

Doctors really should read up on this medication and prepare their patients better - even better, I reckon they should be made to take these to see exactly what it feels like lol

I hope the side effects wear off for you soon.

Well said Katie...how a GP could be so ignorant  is beyond me..I took one year to come off ...

Hi Katie, Yes you definitely right because one whole week I couldn't bare the adverse effect, learnt lesson that I would never rely on a hastey doctors lol. I wonder how the withdrawal was intense, even re-

encouraging me to go back after week wasn't helpful tip either.

Doctors don't even prepare patients when they prescribe these either - they don't seem to know how long it takes for the meds to work, don't know that there's ups and downs along the way, don't understand the severity of the side effects let alone the illness in itself, and of course withdrawing from this too.

I really hope Safiya gets relief from the withdrawl effects soon

Hi Safiya

I feel so sorry for you having to suffer the effects if withdrawl x   I had strange brain zaps when I came off them, nausea, dizziness, cried a lot, was irritable ......... it's a really unpleasant time.

Did the doctor give you a follow up appointment?  Not sure if you could restart a small amount of the medicine and then withdraw slowly - probably best go see your doctor, but I do wonder if he'd the best one now to advise this?

Yes Katie, my dizziness hell lot of awfull, I have been thinking to go back and discuss with him again. It's horrible feeling as I was mostly in bed and not active whatso ever, feeling unexplainable anger, extremely low energy like I have been ill for a whole month. I hope things will improve by the way thank you for such a wonderful advice and helpful.

Safiya

Thank you

Yes think you should go back and see him.  It won't hurt.  Tell him that stopping this medicine is quite dangerous actually (and he's a silly man) lol.

Take care, and hope things settle for you real soon.
