Super sensitive skin post umbilical hernia surgery

I had a double incisional/umbilical hernia which needed hernia mesh surgery back in May of this year. It is 7 months later and I still have severe skin sensitivity in a 6” area around the surgery site. Even having my clothing rub against it is very painful. My surgeon said that she had never seen anything like it, and referred me to a pain specialist. He said he thinks it’s nerve damage. He has put me on a large dose (1800mg a day) of Gabapentin. So far it’s the only thing that has helped at all. It’s still painful, but the medication helps take the edge off.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I would love to hear from you. I’m not sure I trust that it will go away on its own like my doctor thinks.

Mention low dose Amitryptelene to your doctor. Can relieve irritation of nerves.

I had a Hernia repair in September and the sensitivity is the same. And yes the surgeon he has never seen this. They are so cavilier and don’t really have any idea of the damage they cause

I seeing my surgeon in December but he has already hinted at Pain relief. Cop out if you ask me

Hope yours subsided soon

I had a similar problem with my mesh. No where near as bad as yours but the mesh constantly made me have pain and discomfort. I had the mesh in for 3 years and did everything they suggested for pain. I was on a high dosage of Gabapentin too and it did little to nothing to help.

I had my mesh removed almost a year ago now and all I can tell you how much better my life is without it. Pretty much no pain now. Not sure if your pain is caused from the surgery or the mesh so I can't say that it would work for you. I'm just letting you know my story.

And all doctors know this about the mesh and still use it. There is a huge class action lawsuit in the states about it. I wish they would do the same in the UK. I would sign up in a second.

Look at the Sling The Mesh site on the internet

Will do. Thanks!

So far both of these doctors are trying to blame the sensitivity on everything but the mesh. I go back to see the pain specialist in two weeks. I’m going to confront him on this.

Hope you feel better soon!

I’m glad they relieved your pain, I’m sorry they had to do it surgically. I’m afraid that that’s what I’m going to have to do.

I already talked to an attorney about it and he said I don’t have a case unless I have to have another surgery to fix it.

I’m pretty sure my sensitivity is due to the mesh because the sensitive area is right where the mesh is.

I think I need to see another doctor to really find out what’s going on. I can’t live with this for much longer. If surgery is needed to fix this, I need to know so that I can get it done ASAP.
