Surgeon meeting today

Morning all, 6 weeks 3 days post op and I am seeing my surgeon today.

I have the usual list of questions, however my list seems short, I'm sure there are some important questions and of course answers I need, come on all you lovely hippies what were your questions...

Thanks

Just some ideas which have had conflicting views...

Does crossing the midway line rule last for the rest of your life or can it be eased?

Does your weight effect the longevity of your hip?

Is it better to exercise and keep the muscles strong - walking etc?

Is the risk of dislocation post op (say, after a year) decrease to be the same as a natural hip?

Good luck!

Michael

My check is on Friday, Barbara.

This is my second hip in 8 months (RTHR 30/6/15 & LTHR 12/2/16) so I think I got most of my answers the first time around.

Like Michael I had some questions (being young!!!!) about how to preserve my hips for as long as possible. My consultant then launched into a rather long list of lifetime restrictions which shocked me as I had read on here about people being encouraged to go back to skiing etc.

These restrictions have led me down a whole new career path as I had a very physical job before. On Friday I will be spending time explaining what I need him to write in a letter in order to claim my pension.

Therefore, I would advise that you think about your own life, hobbies, sports, job etc and ask about the effect on those.

I also asked exactly what kind of hip hardware he had used as I had signed up to The National Joint Registry and they wanted to know.

Hi Barbara,

I agree with Kate ... t the things you used to be able to do but couldn't anymore because of mobility and pain ... for me that would be itting on the floor in lotus position  - I don't think I ever will ...

good luck and please let us know what you were advised

Barbara, would you mind sharing your short list too? I meet with my surgeon 3/29. Thx

Hi all, we'll all went well today,,Consulatant very happy with progress made... Loads of questions asked but in a nut shell.

I am now able to drive.

I can if I wish return back to work.

I can start exercising again, but too listen to my body ,, suggested swimming for a while and build up from that.

No 90 degree bend for 3 months.

No sleeping on my side for 3 months, however I can now lay on the operated side.

Keep my weight down ( happy with my weight now though ).

My hip is

titanium oxicarbonitride, which he said should last me 20 years ( I am now 56 ).

He was very clear in saying that my left hip has detroiated and that he is willing to put me on the waiting list for replacement, I advised that the pain is so far manageable and I will go through the normal route of seeking advice from my Gp.

I need to talk to my Gp regarding anti inflamotroies, as he felt that I needed to carry on with these due to the left hip.

I spoke with my Gp after the meeting this morning she does not want me back at work yet and has given me three more weeks off.

I think that's about it, I didn't get chance to read your messages so apologies for that.

Pit goes without saying that I have benefitted loads from being on here, it did scare me a bit at first, ( pre op ) due to some scary stories, but any questions I have asked have always been answered by you lovely folk.

Xx

hope this all make sense ... Lol

Hi Barbara,

Well done darling - you must feel so relieved - Too bad about the left hip though - I remember the shock I was in when I was told the same - from  experience , don't wait too long, okay - I did and it does not get better - it also hampered the healing of right hip...

The 6 months in between were miserable - just saying .... Nice friend I am huh!!!

Also, without the people here on the forum I would not have had the courage ... I thought I was a freak .. seriously ... who had 2 bad hips in such a short time??? well, I was not the only one and so I was in good company eith the 2nd THR wave ...

Sorry for being a downer here

big warm hug
