My day started off with a trip to the ER as I'd just showered and redressed my drain wound the previous night, and couldn't sleep due again due to back pain, when my girlfriend noticed the full foot or so of drain that was inside me was hanging outside of my body. The on call surgeon said it was ok just to bandage the hole as the drain output was a cranberry juice color with no signs of infection, came home and slept a bit in my recliner and woke up feeling so achy I just had to crawl into bed for a few hours, and OMG I WOKE UP WITH ZERO ACCUTE BACK PAIN! My theory is the drain was somehow causing this back pain so my body was pushing it out of my body, I am sure I gave it a couple of accidental tanks, but amazingly all that back pain is just gone. What a roller coaster ride this continues to be, wanted to post for others with unexplained pains don't just yank your drain out as that is normally very bad, but know that having it removed post op (colostomy reversal) may turn the pain completely around!
So glad you are not in pain any more. Good news.
glad you’re pain-free
Unfortunately the pain moved from my spine to my leg, dealt with this about 4 months ago, pinched sciatic nerve.
So I can walk half a block with a better posture, then the 2nd half feels like lava eating my leg, there just isn’t ever an easy moment in life anymore ![]()
Far from it unfortunately, the pain just moved to my leg and intensified, I am starting to think I am literally never going to be healthy again ![]()
Its eating away at my sanity.
I’ve been feeling a bit like that lately. It’s very early days for you though. Hope it all gets sorted out. It’s such major surgery.
It’s been 3 years of surgeries beginning with a herniated disc, diverticulitis and everything that had followed, I’m 34 and have not been healthy at any point on my 30s.
So at this point it’s about never ending ![]()
Goodness me you have been through a lot for someone so young . At least I got to my sixties before all of this happened. It really happened because my gastroenterologist had missed the signs that my bowel had perforated with a really nasty infection. So I’m I’m bitter about that . I don’t feel like I’m fully recovered either. I still have some problems with pain and a few bladder problems and as I’ve said in my posts now they’re looking for a hernia as well as I’ve already got an incisional hernia. .I’ve also had back pain ever since the ( surgeries I never had back pain in my life before I was very fit and healthy slim 62 year old when all this started. .I do have a wonderful surgeon and I have a lot of faith in him so I’m hoping that some answer will be found when I have the MRI later in November. I’m also back on painkillers which I hate but I just have to have them, I depend on them now. So I really sympathise with you, you are so young to be going through this.
Yes my surgeon said my back / leg problem sounds like it may require a surgery after I heal from this one, but I’m determined to alleviate the pain via PT and work out like a madman to build back and spine strength.
I’m really beginning to question how much longer my body can withstand 24/7 shocking pain, and just 4 years ago I had perfect health the last 30 years solid ![]()
Omg lot to put up with at your age. I’m having terrible crampy pains in lower stomach today which I haven’t never haf since my surgery I have different pain usually, so I don’t even know what’s going on today. I get very anxious about it all.
Yeah I’ve been told “call us right away if the pain gets too much to handle” and I’m thinking if my pain continues upward I’d be in the ER.
Started getting little IBS shocks of pain the last couple days as well, things are going to keep getting worse before it gets better ![]()
Well I’m back in hospital tonight. Pain just became unbearable . Tests tomorrow.
Hey Rommon I’m sorry to read of all you are going through. I had a reversal 12 weeks after having it put in. That surgery was worse than the original if possible. I didn’t have a drain but I had an adhesion grow around my colon right at my ileocecal valve. The fifth and final surgery in four months got that fixed but I lost the valve. Now diarrhea is my constant friend. Taking fiber tablets and eating whole grains seem to be good for me. Still have occasional bouts but I’m 4 years out from last surgery but I can still remember every facet of it but the pain is becoming a distant memory. I hope they find out and stop the back pain for you. This is a great place to find friends who can relate to what you are going through. Please keep checking back in and respond to several discussions. You will never know how much your experience can help someone else. Take care. Keep your chin up chickadee.
Lucy
Yes I’m really gritting my teeth and working through the leg pain, I think its sciatic nerve / spine related, I believe my surgeon will be taking some kind of image my next follow up.
Though without the colostomy issues and I can work out normally again, I will be keeping myself well in shape once I am cleared by surgeon and leg pain goes away. Thanks for your input ![]()
Lucy I’ve had bowel resection, iliostomy, reversal too. I’m in hospital because of right side groin pain, going on since reversal year ago. Very severe on tuesday hence my admission to hospital. Can i ask what the symptoms were with your adhesions. Thats one of the things my surgeon mentioned.
Symptoms were those of a blockage. urge to have a BM. Can only pass some liquid but only what was below the blockage. Throwing up and not able to stop. Went to hospital in ambulance. Weakness to the extent of laying in the bathroom floor and not able to get up. Dehydration. No fever that I remember but I do remember my body purging itself.
That’s about it. Thank God every day that I was able to overcome this. You will overcome it, too. It takes time. Time for your body to find its way back to normal. I had 5 major surgeries in 4 months because of a fistula. It was a battle but when I got to the end of the battle I had come out on top. I just kept looking and waiting on the six weeks mark. It felt like an eternity but when I look back now it was only a few weeks and they really do pass pretty fast. Keep your head up. Keep the end in sight. You will get there. I’ll be here to talk if you need me.
Did yours initially heal fine? Mine seems to be healing perfect outside the leg pain, does healing last for 1 year+?
My surgeon made it sound like a few months after the surgery life will be 100% normal, given there are no complications, I’m not even allowed to do PT for my back as it may cause a hernia down the road.
I’m not even sure if performing household tasks like lightly doing dish / taking out garbage / any quick light cardio occasionally.
Would I know right now if I messed up how I am going to heal?
And so sorry to hear about your situation, I am so tired if hospitals ![]()
Initially i healed well. But i didn’t have drains or anything. Quite straightforward. I took things very easy for a few months. I think my problems now are just because the abscess did such damage in there. And I’m 64, so not young. I did walk as soon as i could, i like walking. These are very early days for you.
That’s interesting, that was the symptoms i had the other day. Extreme pain, urge to go but couldn’t. He’s doing lots of tests but if nothing shows up he thinks possible adhesions. He will do laparoscopy and scope it, fix it if he can. I feel like you, like i have to fight another battle, but i am optimistic. He is a great surgeon, my abscess made a mess in there, and hopefully it will get sorted. Thanks so much for your kind words. Helps so much.
