Surgery in 2 weeks THR any advice for good prep

Hi Guys, been in agony for a couple of years now and pure hell for past 6 months or so. Limping unable to get off loo without everyones help ( and having teenage sons this is kinda embrassing!).

Anyhow had xray and Consultant last week cartilage now gone entirely on left hip. anyhow had pre op on Tuesday and seems p god all systems go for surgery on july 17th.

Ok for prep ive stopped any booze ( was prob using 2 bottles a week tbh as a crutch ’ scuse the pun!) to be in good shape. stopped a lot of painkillers cos for all the use they were they were was a waste of time. Have raised toilet seat as need it at present anyhow.

Can you think of anything else that might help? drinking water a goid bit. Also have had to stop working this week, im a mental health nurse and it was becoming really unsafe. Colleagues and bosses had been so supportive but tbh theyd been carrying me through due to my immobility.

any advice lads? of course im scared but know i cant go on this way any longer. oh and its an epidural procedure. no other health probs except mild well treated depression

Thanks a mill in Advance

i can so sympathize!! you have described me too !! im 9 months post op and in excruciating pain !
doctor #8 has decided the new hip has loosened and slipped down into thigh bone !!
revision surgery scheduled for 16th
good luck to us both xx

I understand the pain you are in as I was experiencing the same. Could not even remember the last time I was not in pain prior to surgery. I’m now nearly 5 weeks post op and have no pain. The first 2 weeks are tough but then things turn around very quickly.

As for preparation, I think you need to prep your mind more than your body. As I said, the first 2 weeks are tough. Physically and mentally. But you’ll get through it and it will be worth everything.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hello
Im 45. 7 mths post op and work in a similar field to yours, my youngest child is 17.
I feel for you but hope that like myself you will be delighted with the outcome!
I had been in pain for 7-10years since my 30s with suspected dysplasia at it worse i struggled to walk to the letterbox. Now im wearing high heels and have no pain after years of suffering. I could cry with gratitude!!
The firsr few weeks after the op were hard, nobody prepares you for the fact you may feel initially worse after all be it temporary, The emotional impact i wasnt quite prepared for and im paid to listen to peoples problems!
I wondered if i had made the right decision.
7 mths on wow!!! I took recovery slow in the sense that if i wasnt walking when i rested i would mostly rest on my bed with a ice pack on my hip…i walked with one crutch at a month and none at about two months and when walking in the country i used one crutch up until 3 or so mths…i tried not to compare myself with others…i wish you all the best, listen to your body be kind to yourself!

Thanks so much im eating the information on line just trying to be well prepped mentally and emotionally. Good solid advice there and glad to hear you are doing better now. Keep in touch and take care. x

Hello there, that’s terrific! High heels what a dream…well done you! and love the advice on recovery. Yes as far as I can read emotional and physically the first two weeks will be a test. So important to know that, had kinda guessed the same but really important to hear it from other people too. why the heck did we wait so long! best wishes and thanks so so much for the reply x

Hi it may not be what you want to hear as it might involve more loo time but keep well hydrated (with water) pre op. and eat as clean as possible.
all the best

You may need a bath seat if you do not have a walk in shower. Great that you have help at home… that is important. I had same situation as you … pain so bad it was exhausting. The good news is I am now pain free. I also kept moving as much as possible right up to my surgery… helps recovery if your muscles are as strong as possible before surgery.

hi Sandra
Sorry to hear that you’re in such pain. i had right hip replacement in March and will have second one done in September. All is well with first one. Before the operation i tried to eat healthily, got into a positive state of mind with family and friend support. i prepared for my time in hospital and also for my coming home after the operation.

good to hear thanks so much, I try to keep active at moment, and then alternate with rest. Best wishes, Sandra

thanks so much, wise words best wishes for Sept

Sandra

Lose weight as this helps recovery. Get a comfortable chair at the right height and all the NHS aids, grabber, bath stool, kitchen stool etc. it’s not as bad as you think the operation. I had an injection in my back and some sedation and didn’t feel a thing just fell asleep and minimal pain even right after the operation

Andrew

hi sandra i had epidural im almost 6 weeks post op now all we t fine sounds like youve got all covered. i didnt stop pain relief prior only Ra medication as had fibrymyaliga to contend with as well as hip.
i was told i would feel a different pain after op and i think its true it is its not the hip any more. DO the excercises and rest when body tells you my hardest thing was am i doing enough its been good to read other peoples expierences once i started to do that things got easier and every day after op is different and easier
take care good luck

thanks so much, for your advice, best wishes for your continued recovery.

Sandra

Thank you all the best with the op
Lesley

Sandra,

You are lucky, that is amazingly quick from seeing the consultant. Have you cooked and frozen food, it helps. You will not be able to bend or twist so keep mugs, plates cooking utensils at arms length, put things on the work surface that you will need if you are alone.

God luck with your op.

Hi Sandra, few tips here: remove all rugs and bath mats, trip hazards, if you do not have a walk in shower nhs will provide a bath board for showering, walk in showers they provide a seat. keep all toiletries as per cooking/eating utensils within arms reach so as not to stretch, cut your toenails the day before operation as you can’t do them for a while, buy a long handled squegee type thing to help wash feet and back. A handled toiletry size bag is ideal to hook over your crutch handle so you can carry a flask, tablet, phone or book upstairs when you want to rest. I had a hook device rather than grabber that had a shoe horn on the other end, the hook helped get knickers on and the shoe horn was a god send, no lace shoes advisable as well. Stock up on a non perfumed moisturiser, the one with a letter and two numbers is good (getting passed the mods)! also the common oil to rub in once scar is less pink. Sorry if it’s long winded but these are what I found most useful. Best wishes
Helen

After the op the two most useful things I had was a grabber and also a long bit of material looped thing to help me get my leg in and out of bed. It was given to me by the hospital, I was also given raised loo seat and crutches, but nothing else, no shower seats etc. I do have a walk in shower which really was great.
