Surgery vs. Steriod Injections???

Hi There

I have had a Keliod on my shoulder for approx a year and a half now. It happened on my 25th birthday and strated from a graze, little did I know I would be prone to it forming into a Keliod!

I visited my doctor recently and showed him a scar from having a Mole removed in Nov. He said that I am prone to Keloid scaring and should have taped it up for 3-6 months.

I have decided to have the recent scar injected and am debating whether to have surgery on my shouler or get it injected. The doctor said he would recommend surgery and then taping it for up to 6 months, changing the dressing weekly.

I am just worried that I will go through all of that to end up with another Keloid! Has anyone tried this option of taping it for a long period?...

Cheers

I developed keloid scarring on my earlobe after having my ears pierced It was so huge that people thought i was wearing an earring. Apparently, keloid scarring after having ears pierced is not uncommon.

I had surgery on it to cut it off but then the hospital put backs on a pair of earings that I had to wear to keep the scar flat.

I believe that taping a scar up or keeping it pressed flat really helps. And they have actually developed special plasters that you can buy for scars now.

hey terryl, may i know what kind of plasters are there out in the market?

also, any concealers that work for keloids?

Hi again

I just noticed it has been over a yr since my last post so I thought I would give an update..

I decided not to go with the surgery option as the specialist said it is more than likely to scar again and after reading the experiences in here I realised I could come off worst off.

I tried the steroid injection with sika gel pads. I def noticed a difference after the first one and I think the gel pads did help. Only thing is they are a pain to use as they start to loose their stickyness and I had to tape them on. Also they can be quite costly. Nonetheles I might try them again as the good thing is they work on old scars. I have had another 2 injections since the first one that have also helped a lot particulary on the newer scar formed from a mole I had removed. They have tended to look bigger by overall size but are flatter so look less noticeable. My new specislist thinks taping doesn't make a difference but I think it did help flatten them (just with regular wound type tape).

When I went back a few months ago the specialist didn't want to inject again as noticed my skin thinning a bit and also sinking in slightly. Instead he did a laser teatment to help with the redness. It really hurt, tok all of 3 mins and cost about $300 $NZ. I can't remember the name of the laser. May have helped a bit but nothing major. I might give it another go in the future though.

Anyway I'll be interested to hear of any new products out in the market that work!

Thanks
