Swelling 3 months after tkr

Had a R TKR on April 25. Returned at 8 weeks. Physical therapy was going great before returning to work. I was actually ahead of schedule for most of my recovery.

After my return to work I have been having issues with swelling. Still going to physical therapy twice a week. They re-evaluate me every four weeks. Today was that day.

I had only improved in one area since last month. If I contnue to stay the same I was told they would have no choice but to release me because that would mean it is not helping me any more.

This has depressed me so much.To have started out so strong and to end up like this,We are going to schedule me twice a week again this month with half of the classes being pool therapy.

I ice, rest and elevate my leg as much as i can. I'm up and down at work so elevating or icing it there is not an option.I was told swelling could be ongoing for around 6 months post op.

Any suggestions?

Hello yogibear...maybe they are releasing you because your ROM is already really good. ?

What is your ROM for bending and straightening?

Hi Yogi, please don't feel discouraged or depressed about it.  Just keep doing the work and see your doctor again if you're concerned.

Hi , I'm 8 months post 'tkr' and just yesterday had swelling and a little pain after PT for heart surgery to replace a bad valve. I take these signs as my body telling me to be careful and slow down. So I rested yesterday and iced and took some tylenol. I have PT today so I will choose a different machine for cardio and will go slow.

Be kind to your knee. It sounds like the continuous movement from work is adding a new strain to your knee, and if you get released from PT, you can still exercise. You may not need their efforts, it just means you graduated. Celebrate the success. If you really get concerned, go to your doc. Mine told me the knee can swell up to a year post replacement. Good luck.

Are you taking anti inflammatories? Might help reduce swelling. Apart from basically resting your still healing knee not sure what else would help as you are icing and elevating as much as you are able

Indeed, the strengthening and healing continues. I am 4.5 months and my knee often reminds me that healing is hard work and it is still in progress!
