Swelling and now bursitis 18 weeks post op - has anyone had this and how did you resolve it

the area around my scar has remained swollen, but I also have a lot of swelling on the back of my thigh, side of my hip and bottom, despite doing all the exercises and physio. as a result the pressure causes pain on my muscles when sitting and lying on my back or operated side. walking is more and more painful so I have to remain on crutches as the pressure of the swelling causes me to limp. my mri showed bursitis in a number of areas, but the orthopaedic team are unwilling to advise anything other than wait. I am now doing less exercise than at 10 weeks as I am I am in so much pain. I cannot take anti inflammatories due to other drugs. I see from reading about bursitis that steroid injections are a route, but the whole surgical site is so painful I cannot even wear normal trousers yet. Has anyone had this experience and if so how did you tackle it? My good hip is now so painful from taking the brunt it keeps me awake too. Thanks for any input you can give.

Gill every recovery journey is different. There is short term recovery the basic heeling when bone has initially adhered to the bone. Then there is long term healing, ligament and muscles take longer to heal usually over a year. When i had thr the surgeon removed the bursa to eliminate bursitis.
Some of us have severe complications after thr , while others do not.

Also icing the swelling is helpful 20 minutes several times a day. rest is very helpful and just walking with a rollator walker was helpful in walking while recovering to eliminate limping. stand up straight and heel to toe steps. In the early stages it takes concentration.

The healing journey is different for everyone. had two thr and one revision last year and each was different. one thing all mine had in common is time …it takes time and patience. I think a lot of emphasis
is on HOW fast the turn around in recovery is, and more needs to be explained on how long the healing process is and what to expect , and not to rush it.

It’s not just replacing the old parts then back to mobility. It’s much more complicated than most rehab and doctors explain. We are all left on our own to discover the many complicated stages to healing and recovery.

Gill sending lots of healing blessings your way, one day at a time.

Hi I had a hip replacement 2 years ago and had constant groin and inner thigh pain up until 4 weeks ago. I had an ultrasound scan on the area that showed up a lot of fluid caused by inflammation, I had that drained and also a steroid injection into my groin. So far so good !

thank you for your blessings and help. I had begun to think I was going crazy as the doctors have been telling me this is very unusual and that I am an enigma, which has not been helpful when in so much pain, lack of sleep, etc. I hope you continue to do well.

thank you, I have been pushing and eventually have MRi results and a follow up. good luck, let me know how it goes. right now I cannot imagine having a needle inserted I am so sore, but if it works then it will be worth it.
