My op leg and foot are still swollen at week 10!! not as bad as earlier weeks, earlier weeks it felt like foot was going to explode.
hi sheila ... swollen leg going all the way down to ankle apparently is very normal - I was told it could last or a couple of weeks but for me it took one week, except or my ankle/foot - skin was so tight and warm - I was told to lie down and elevate the leg -
Warm hug and let us know how you are doing ....
Hello brave lady ... 11 days on here, and different bits of my leg seem to swell at different times! Last night it as thigh and knee. Today it's been my ankle but I've been up and about more, walking for the first time outside up and down our close. It's very good when we get to do that as it seems recovery is a distinct possibility after all! I wasn't sure about the advice not to elevate the feet - surely going to be is doing exactly that? All the best 🌺
I will be at week 5 on Tuesday and yes swollen feet, ankles & Knees both sides and thigh on operated side still very swollen. I have found it more difficult to stay in bed all the time when everything is sore / swollen and personally I wouldn't. You have more chance of DVT. You need to excersize to help with the swelling and get your blood flowing in your legs.
Thank you all see what happens, only just mobile in house with two crutches
Is that 11 days post op ?
Yes, I had RTHR on 5/5. At first I was rather shocked by the feeling of helplessness and necessary dependence on any kind of help. But it's amazing how quickly strength begins to return. It's major surgery we've had so it's good to be kind to ourselves and really listen to our bodies. 🌺
Yes I did sheila and they go down with time, don't worry about it. I just sat with mine up whenever I was sat down.
I was told not to do that, only when lying in bed should I put my legs up
Where are you UK? I think you need to ring a Dr or the hospital and get their advice just in case. I elevated and iced my swollen leg after thr (ice in a cloth so you dont get frost bite) but there may be a reason you have been told not to elevate.
I am amazed at the different advice given. You can't stay in bed all day, you need to gradually increase movement. I use a recliner, initially with a deep cushion to help get in and out of the chair. Now I don't need that anymore. As I speak, my feet are up on a foot stool with another deep cushion on top. I can kick the stool away, when I need to go and do whatever. I am 4 weeks post op and every few days I see little changes. My operated leg is still swollen, but is not too bad. The consultant said I could remove the stockings after 3 weeks. I am trying to build up gentle excercises along with good food and plenty of rest. after that, it's a matter of time. As the song goes "time goes by so slowly, as time alone can do". That!s why I am sitting in front of the telly, instead of climbing Mount Everest. I hear that's not all it's cracked up to be😯
I have been told only to elevate on the bed, it is on a printout from the hospital
Not in bed all day, just 30 mins late morning and late afternoon
I had my TRHR 4 weeks ago and my ankle still swells although it's seems to be improving. I phoned my hospital to ask about it and they told me it's perfectly normal and can last up to 2 months. But to see my GP if it didn't improve. They also told me to "go with my body" and rest the leg when it got swollen by putting it up on sofa, a chair or bed in line with my hip. So that is what I do and as I say, it seems to be improving.
Hi Sheila,
You have had lots of good advice here and yes I agree that it is amazing how different instructions can be from different doctors, regions and countries.
One thing can be agreed upon, elevation and ice are key. Elevation while you are laying down whether in bed or on a couch or in a chair, putting the foot even to or above our heads is key.
Ice is imperative for swelling. I was fortunate and had swelling one time only about two weeks post opp. it came on quite suddenly involving my entire leg from hip to toes. It hurt so badly that I could not stop crying. Fortunately I was in a rehab facility and they helped me. It took 2 days to dissipate and lots of trips to my bedside toilet with an overly filled bladder.
There was immediate concern about a possible blood clot and some blood work and an ultra sound test proved negative clotting.
Elevation and ice is our friend!
Heal well

Hi Sandra
Your post has answered a question I have. I had my THR 6 weeks ago and everything is settling down, but my left ankle and foot (operated leg) are still puffy and sometimes I get funny sensations (tightness, cold as if circulation cut off). All I got told by consultant at follow up that it is normal, though he didn't really take much notice of my question.
Hope you recovery well and everything calms down soon too.
Best wishes
Hi
I am glad to hear I am not alone. I am at week 6 and leg no longer swollen, but ankle and foot of left leg still puffy and sometimes feels tight. It is a lot better than it was at week 2.
Someone else in the thread say apparently can take upto 2 months.
How is your recovery going otherwise?
Hi Sheila, how are you getting on?
I am week 6 after left THR and like you had swollen foot and swollen leg. The leg took a couple of weeks to go down, but still felt like it was badly bruised. My foot is not quite so tight and swollen, but it is still puffy, as is my ankle.
The advice I was given was if very swollen and puffy, to raise feet above hips (observing the 90 degree rule, of course), but didn't say anything about having to go to bed. I had a rise/recliner chair to use, so that helped me.
How are you feeling otherwise?
