Swelling in feet and legs

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to reduce the swelling in feet and legs?  The swelling goes down during the night, but after an hour or so in the morning, it is back.  I can't wear any of my shoes!

Yup.  Sadly, prednisone.

I have exactly the same problem. My doctor said keep your feet up which is not really practicable. He would not give me water tablets as they do not go too well with steroids. I do have foot and leg massage occasionally which helps a bit and is very enjoyable.

Ive been getting awful fed up of mine recently and I feel bad now cos they are not as bad as yours sound!  Its very uncomfortable isn't it! I have support stockings which are meant to prevent it happening. I hate them, horrible in the summer! But they do work. If I know that I am going to be on my feet a lot I put them on.

Apart from that, feet up... Sure, sure... Very practical, I know. But not just up, up higher than your heart.. Hahaha... What a carry on!

i don't know about you but I have been on steroids for 2 years and am down to 5.25. I really thought this would be improving but it's actually getting worse!

Good Luck! Tell us how you get on

I can't wear my shoes either! Yes, I get the swelling down in the night but in the morning, sure enough it's back. I have tried to talk about the problem with my doctor, but he never unequivocally answers me. Just talks around the bush, so to speak.

I meant to say, I've been off the pred entirely for over a month.

Going to increase the amount of diuretic foods in my diet. There's lots of them. Lemon, oats, beetroot for example. Better idea than drugs if we can get it to work! Don't know how much you have to take. Going to experiment! Will let you know how I get on.

anyone else up for an experiment?

Hi Wilma, I also get the fluid with the Pred; on 40mg a day at the meoment.

Try some fresh celery or celery tablets, very good for fluid retention. Google other foods as well, better than tablets. And yes, stay off them as much as you can when they are bad.

Cheers Dea

I have been on a doctor-prescribed diuretic drug for some years. But still I have foot swelling so severe I cannot wear many of my shoes. As I mentioned above, I have now finished with the steriods and since then, am not noticing any improvement whatever in foot swelling.

Best wishes to all who are struggling--

I was unaware that Steroids and Do not go to well with steroids can you explain please

You should not take water tablets with steroids as they are counterindicative.  Although some doctors do prescribe them but tell people to be careful.

Have been on steroids 4 years, only now have foot swelling (left only!) and leg cramps at same time....annoying....

There are a number of things that can cause edema (swelling). Causes can be as diverse as heart problems, kidney disease, anemia, vein disorders (venous insufficiency) obesity, medication side effects, etc. to name a few. Your doctor should be able to pinpoint the cause, and this will provide answers about how to treat it.

My doctor rambles on and eventually concludes our discussion about this with no real answer(s). I can understand (partly) because there are so many things that can cause the swelling, that it's a pain to try to figure it all out. Yes, my "doctor should be able to pinpoint the cause," but he's not anxious to do so.

My rheumatologist, vascular surgeon and GP all say it is the steroids and shrug their shoulders!
