Hi guys 13 days after thr and I still have a swollen foot and shin very painful and feels just like a burn injury.Doc is treating it as DVT blood test and scan so far have been negative.I noticed something was wrong as soon as epi wore off.Although the hospital was good they were only interested in getting you out. All the exercises and advice for elevation of limb etc I found on the internet . Like most of you people I can only sleep on my back with my leg elevated on plenty of pillows.Has any one else had the scalded leg syndrome I have been told it could be post op nerve damage.Frustrating as I feel it's delaying my recovery.
Hi Andy
I am just 5 weeks post op and yes I have the burning sensation in both legs with some swelling around the knee arera. I have most of the pain in my right knee and right shin down the front the full length. Although it is my left leg they operated on.
I find keeping warm and doing foot pumps as well as taking co codamol does help but does not take all the pain away.
I have also had a doplar scan incase it was DVT they found nothing.
I have to say it is rather uncomfortable and I know like me you are suffering. I hope it won't last too long.
Hey andy ... welcome to this wonderful forum - you will find almost all of your questions answered ... first of all, you have had major surgery and it takes time to heal - as frustrating as it can and will be - what you are feeling is quite normal - I am 9 weeks post-op and still at times feel a burning sensation in muscles - not to discourage you though, but it is what it is ... all those people who told stories about someone who knows someone who had this surgery bounced back in no time, walking miles on end, riding their bikes and turned over the soil in their garden -- it was a piece of cake .... hmm - not really -
If you are up to it and haven't done so, please watch the surgery on you tube - it is not for the weak but after I watched it, I have so much more respect for my body - and with all the fellow hippies here on this forum you will find great and loving support ---- so take it easy and be gentle with yourself
Andy, it's all normal, just think what your poor leg has been through, 13 days is no time at all! I found you have to listen to what your body is saying, rest it if it hurts, and give yourself time to heal. I am 5 weeks post op, 77 years old, and still have swelling round my knee, but it is going down day by day. I came out in a massive bruise round my knee two weeks after the op, presumably where they had held it to manipulate the hip, so it's not just what they did to the hip but the strain on all other parts of you that has to get better. We tend to think once the op is over we should be running about like spring lambs.......not so my friend.......nature needs time to fix it. It will get better, but probably not as fast as you think it ought to!!!
Yes I heard all the stories and thought I was in for six weeks holiday. My mother had the same op but was quite lame before it , so none of us really noticed what had happened to her until about 4 months later.I asked why she didn't warn me to which she replied I didn't like to tell you that you were in for some long nights of pain. Well I must get up now(yet again) and crack on with some exercises.Actually in the night I do find it beneficial to get up and walk about and then go back to bed even if it's two or three times.Plenty of walk abouts with frequent naps seems to work best . Bye
Hi Andy, sorry to hear you have this problem. I can't sleep on my back and have been told I can sleep on the unoperated side as long as there are pillows between my legs supporting the operated hip. Not had the problem you are experiencing so I do hope you feel a lot better soon.
Hello Renee, I found your reply quite encouraging. I am two weeks post op tomorrow and getting frustrated that I am still struggling! I couldn't bring myself to watch the surgery on YouTube - I have to have the other hip done later this year so don't want to know! I have a swollen knee on the operated leg but that wasn't right even before the op having had a total knee replacement on that knee is 2010.
Margaret you reply to Andy is also encouraging to me. Thank you
Hi andy, I thought I had a DVT in the calf about week after the op - I had a lot of calf pain and hot foot. The blood test proved negative. The calf pain lasted quite a long time and I found the standing knee raise exercise really painful. Now 3 and a half weeks post op the calf pain has gone, the foot is not hot and I can do the exercise. So it does get better - you just have to give it time.
Each op is different I had a replacement on the other hip 15 years ago and the recovery was really quick - a lot different this time but I have realised using this forum each op can be different and I mustn't get disheartened and compare! As long as there is some progress I am feeling more positive.
Good luck with your recovery.
Thanks to all for the replies and it has been very encouraging to hear from you all as at the moment I feel like Julian asange I liv e in a beautiful part of North Yorkshire and the dog cannot understand why we are not in them there hills.Well I suppose patience will just have to be the order of the day and Daisy (dog beagle) will just have to put up with it.thanks
Hope you recover quickly Andy so you can get back out with the dog. My two (a labrador and dalmatian) are wondering why their mum isn't taking them out for the usual runs on Dartmoor where we live. Having to put up with hubby taking them for short lead walks - he doesn't "do" dog walking
Hi Jill ... I watched the video when I was 3 weeks post-op .. I had my follow up appointment with surgeon last week, May 13, and low and behold, now the other, left hip, needs surgery as well - didn't see that coming - I am 9 weeks post op now .... have a lovely day and take care!
Thank you Renee. I suppose once one has gone, the other is a candidate too, I have no pain in my unoperated hip but the surgeon says there is quite marked protusio(?) of the socket and displacement of the femoral head. He wants to do it before it gets as bad as the one he has just done because that needed a bone graft! Not looking forward to going through all this again, probably neither are you! Nowhere near as bad as knee replacement though. You take care too
