Had a good day yesterday walked down to shops about 6 houses away but today think I am paying the price I ache all over and feel tired feel like I have taken two spaces forward and 6 back It is 10 days today since I had my op I don't know if it is normal or if I should be doing better I am in a routine I get up get dressed and do my exercises it is a long day but I want to do more but in my mind know I can not is this normal my calf on my op leg still feels very tight
The tiredness is very normal.
I was still taking a couple of naps a day at 10 days.
Keep going with your exercises and take lots of rest. It does get better.
Hi Debbie, Sounds like you are doing really well. Take it steady, listen to your body. I am 3 weeks after op and still have a bit of tightness in my calf, but would recommend introducing the walking slowly. Its still early days. Keep your chin up, you will feel better again tomorrow, just a little bit at a time, with plenty of rest in between. Rest on a bed with your legs up so that the swelling can be eased. Good opportunity to catch up on some reading.
Hi there, all sounds pretty normal with the rest of us. I'm 8 weeks this weekend. I get a bit of a burning sensation around my wound and thigh if I over do it. I still rest up and have the odd nap so I wouldn't worry to much. It's still early days and your doing really well. It will all come good in time.
I seem to get the burn in the middle of the thigh. I think it is where the hip replacement fits into the bone, but at least it is decreasing in frequency.
hi debbie -
in agreement with previous posts -
10 days is still very early in the healing process - not sure how far 6 houses away is but it might have been too much - are you walking with crutches?
you are doing great - I was told to take short walks 2-3 ( 5 - 10 minutes x a day which is better than one longer walk of 15-20 minutes, in the beginning -
slow down darling -
big warm hug

You're doing great! It's still very early in your recovery, and it takes a while, so be gentle on yourself. My feeling is that if you 'overdo' you will pay the price. On that note, a little side story: My sister had a 'partial' done about 7 years ago because she fell and broke her hip. She was really doing great and about 6 months out she fell again! Thank goodness no damage, but the Doc told her to of course keep moving and exercising, but to space herself a little more as it usually takes a full year to completely recover and heal! She says since her second fall it set her back terribly and now she has problems with balance. All that said this was several years back and they have come a long way even since then with proceedures and techniques etc, but it still takes time to completely heal. I am 9 days out and doing better every day, getting up from chairs MUCH easier, etc. but am still 'slightly' swollen in my thigh area. Still feels somewhat 'tight' when I bend my knee upon sitting down. I'm thinking all this is normal. I will see Doc next week so we'll see. Believe it or not though, I'm not having TOO much of a problem sleeping, sometimes good and sometimes not so good but one day at a times. The darned 'pee time' in the middle of the night (which I have done for years anyway) sometimes has me up for the remainder! UGH!!! But, I do get comfortable enough usually to sleep well the beginning of the night, which is a BLESSING.
Happy healing hippies!
Hugs, Terri
You seem to be doing really well keep up the good work
Hi they did not give me crutches they give me 2 walking sticks
Agreed Adam, over time it has reduced.
If you are walking that far on day 10 you are doing great! Just don't over do! I was walking first day of surgery with a walker then within a couple days I was walking with a cane and that was a fiasco! Kept dropping it and having a hard time bending down to pick it up so I decided to say to heck with the cane and started walking unassisted! I have MS so I have lower back pain which keeps me off my feet as it hurts when I stand too long! I work around the house and some days it seems like I am up doing stuff for half an hour then sitting for 15 mins off and on all day long! Really stinks to be in constant pain and not just from THR!!! Keep up the good work!

Hi Debbie:
Sounds like you are doing great for just being 10 days post-op. I am sure it takes it all completely out of you making that walk. Is pretty normal to start out with short walks. Swelling and tightness in the leg is also normal. Your strength will come back it just comes back slowly. So many of us have thought that we would be able to do more very soon after the surgery, but it takes time. The feeling of taking steps forward and then back is also normal, happens to so many of us. Hang in there you will improve. Wishing you well....Barb
I hear you loud and clear. I am 5 weeks post op and think the same things at least 10x per day.
Do go for short walks at least 3x per day. Some days you can go a little further, some days not. It is not a linear process - it's always good days and bad days. Just accept it. Push yourself a little on good days and rest more on bad days.
I have been very lucky in my recovery. Hardly any pain, mostly achiness and weakness. I find the mental aspects much harder. Boredom, frustration and cabin fever. When I try to buck up and overdo it, I am quickly tired and sweaty and out of breath. No stamina. I get p*ssed off at myself then I have to remind myself that I was severely limited in my activities before because of awful pain. Just because my hip is mechanically sound, the rest of my body needs to catch up.
It DOES get better ... slowly. Good luck!
Hi Debbie, I would say you are doing brilliantly and also it is normal to feel tired. I was told by my early discharge nurse to aim to walk 3 houses extra a day gradually building it up. Worked quite well but once i got to half way round the road and had to come back it was tough. A few swear words and taking my time helped! Make sure you also go to bed for 2 hours every afternoon, even if you dont sleep its good for swelling. Muscles tighten up every wear, dont forget you are now walking differnetly to how you were before. Get someone to masage your leg may help. I still get tight muscles now and again a year on, its all part of the healing process.
Hi Debbie, I think you're doing well. Just take it steadily, and don't overdo it. After a busy day, try to have a more relaxing one, give your body time to recover. I had crutches, and was v mobile, think it must be hard just having sticks. Wishing you all the best.
Echoing Terri's thoughts and we are on the same schedule! Pace yourself and listen to your body. It is good to have a few wee naps thru the day as long as you keep up exercises and short stretches of walks. Build them up slowly and listen to your bod - it will tell you if you need to slow down.
Good luck.
