Swimming after THR

Does anyone knows if I be able to carry on to do breast strokes when I go swimming again or do I need to stop that and do front crawl???

I was told I should not do breaststroke so I do crawl or back stroke.

i was told yes you can, no you can’t by different doctors& physio. One doctor told me, carry on with breast stroke, but, don’t stretch your legs to wide. I’ve been swimming now for two yrs now and no problems. …walking in the pool helps too, I was advised. Hope this helps.

I have 2 anterior hip replacements, done last year. I do breast stroke all the time. I also lift weights on the weight machines at the gym. My surgeon said there were no restrictions.

Hello BHappy,

Well, again folk get different advice.
I was told breast stroke was fine, jogging fine, only bungie jumping not.
Which is wot I do as good advice for keeping healthy !
Warmly,

I am a swimming instructor Have had 2 hip replacements. Check with yr physio, if allowed do what is comfortable. Do NOT use fins at all for breastroke ever. Good luck with yr swimming.

I had my twenty year old THR revized last year due to the poly wearing our. the ball wore through it. Ugh! this year after having my total ankle replacement revision I started back to swimming and have been. doing the breaststroke with no issues so far.

Not seen a physio. been doing over half a mile five days a week and sometimes walk up to six miles later the same day at a fast pace. Celebrated my 78th birthday a few days ago.
Good luck everyone. Richard

I swim breaststroke all the time. 14 months post op now and no issues. Swim 4 times a week. It took till about 10-12 weeks post op before I was able to swim again though I exercised and walked in the pool from 5 weeks post op. Also do aqua fit, pilates and yoga

Best Wishes

Hello Ann
Thanks for you good wishes. Life is good because this time last year there was a very bug question mark over whether the revision of the poor original TAR would be successful. My surgeon tells me that the biggest danger is ME pushing myself too hard. He may just have a point! Cheers, Richard

when ready ask your doctor for water therapy . it will help get your legs back in shape also zero gravity treadmill is a great way to slowly gain back leg strength.. when your back in the swim of things thats something only you can answer when your ready.. if it causes pain and put undo stress on the joint is something to consider . many hippies return to life in many ways before surgery, some need a little adjustment to things, hiking riding, golfing etc. be sure to train well and be strong before pushing to far. take it slow it may surprise you what you can do after THR. good luck

I have been swimming breaststroke with no problems. I’ve had both hips replaced.

great thank you all very much for your comments. they are really helpful

thank you all for all your advices.
Its good to know whet people get told from doctors and physio’s.

Wow Richard, that is amazing.
Well done.
Petra

I’m 2 years post op, and swim twice a week, and my surgeon is very happy with me swimming breast stroke.
All the best, Judith

Pleased that you are doing well Richard, and happy birthday for last week!

It seems to depend on the surgeon as to the advice you will get.

I had a THR last year and I do a lot of breaststroke at practice.

Great thank you for answering my question
