Swimming

Hi all has anyone gone swimming after they hsve had their hips done...ive had both mine done last year both at same time and doing well mow but would like go go swimming again but km worried they might come unlodged or something.

I can only do the breast stroke where your legs go out like a frog ..just bit worried about going again and wanted to know if anyone has gonr swimming after their opp..?. Debs

I have been swimming but my physio advised me against using the legs for the breast stroke so I just paddled around lol

Hi Debs

Not had my op yet but because of the pain with 'frog' legs doing breast stroke, like you I only do breast stroke, I purchased a float which I put between my legs, problem solved!

Same here Debbie, I can only do breast stroke and thought I may never be able to swim again however on my 6 week appointment when I asked my consultant, he said I can do breast stroke 3 mths post op. I was so pleased, but I will be careful and take it slowly till I'm happy with it. It may depend on the type of prosthesis you have. I have ceramic on ceramic uncemented.

Hi christine yes i have ceramic on ceramac too.and my consultant said it wss pk to swim ..but still but nervy lol..i just have to take it easy see how it goes ..debs

Thanks all for replys

Hi Debs, I have been swiming since about 10 weeks and breaststroke, but ask your Dr to make sure. I had Anterior.

I had anterior and have been swimming all strokes since 3 weeks post THR.

Hi Debbie,

I had your normal run of the mill hip replacement, my surgeon told me at 10 weeks that swimming was reccomended and yes I could do breast stroke.  I started at about 4 month post op, no problems.  I am in the pool twice a week for about an hour.  As with everything else we all seem to get different instructions.

Hi thanks for reply.thst makes me feel bit better.....what is anterior? Debs

Thanks for reply lorraine that makes me feel bit better lol..debs

Hi

i was told by my surgeon that i was able to go swimming at my 6weeks check and he told me i could do breaststroke.

I did and it felt wonderful....now recovering from left thr and have 3 more weeks before i see surgeon.

I didn't push myself but build the swimming up over time

Dee xx

I have been swimming, luckily I like doing the crawl and the backstroke, but you can do the breastroke with the arms, using the crawl action with the legs, it works just as well.  Your hips will not become unlodged or anything, you are not weightbearing while swimming and it is good exercise.  The Physio at the hospital said after 6 weeks we could go swimming and it was all right to do any stroke, including the breaststroke.  Seeing as I was never a good breaststroker and before my op, it hurt my hip to do it, I have stuck to my favourite crawl and it is fine and I also feel good afterwards.  So if you like it, then get in that water again!

Ok thanks Dee hope you get back to yourself soon xd

Hi Barbara I had thought about doing breastroke with arms and moving feet up and down but I'm not a very confident swimmer and was concerned I might forget and panic and do frog legs lol all good now though as I have the OK at 3 mths to do breaststroke proper.

Hi Debs

I swam 400 metres four weeks after my op but only crawl as breast stroke provides rotation of the joint and is not good. I swam again a week later and added more distance. Last week I swam a 1200 metres for charity so all is good. It has to be one of the best exercises for us hippies as there is no impact involved. Good luck

Lol yes im same christine think i would get mixed up doing thst way too ..but im glad i got replys to help me get back in the water ..debs

Thanks for reply trevor...a couple of people on her said they have done the breast stroke and seem ok but must admit im still bit worried about it..i can omly do breast stroke and side stroke cant do the crawl...maybe i try what barbara sugested above....just hope i dont get muddled up and drown lol...thanks for reply.debs

Hi Debs

Try breast stroke arms and crawl legs - only a slight change but it will eliminate the rotation issue

Failing that try small outboard motor !!!!!!

Lol ok thanks trevor :-)

Hi

I was told to go swimming.....best exercise but not to do the breast stroke or any other stroke that involved moving my legs in the breast stroke motion.

The chances of your hip getting dispaced are greater.

Love
