Worrying long term now! I've had a hemiarthroplasty and was worried about osteoarthritis in future so was planning on reducing my exercise so as not to erode cartilage. Logically the less I use the hip the longer the cartilage will last and I don't think I'd be strong enough to have a revision as I have MS. Now I'm reading things about the importance of keeping muscles strong as otherwise the joint loosens and this causes problems. What "loosens" and what type of pain does that cause? I may be wheelchair bound in future so assuming that will delay osteoarthritis but will that problem be replaced by pain from loosening of muscle? Very confused and people so knowledgeable on this site. Won't see surgeon for months so thought I'd pick your brains. Thanks in advance.
Carol hi your ms might hinder your recovery a bit. But most my exercise was while sitting in a chair. Your physical therapist can give you exercise that's sitting & standing !!!
My son of 36 was just diagnosed ms 5 months ago. It hit him like a ton of bricks. "All we can do is keep pushing ourselves and live with what we got " qoute from my son.
Pain is not a big deal if you have a good DR. You will need pain meds to help with pt
But it all good cause you dont hurt like ya did !! Best to ya
David.
Sorry to hear about your son but I was 38 when I was diagnosed with MS and am now 55 and still here. Just tell him NOT to break his hip! That's proving worse than anything the MS did to me. Best wishes.
Hi Carol
I'll tell him that. I'm trying to get him off sidewalks & to walk on the grass. It's much more forgiving on knees head or hips . He's got a good attitude ,partner & he got his job right before ms. They give insurance when you start working so thank God he is covered for his monthly injections . Hope your hip problem turns for the better
David
dear carol,
so sorry to hear this, darling ...
who told you to do less exercises in order to keep the cartilage from eroding?
What "loosens" is probably the hip prothesis -
I am not able to give you a responsible answer to your question - please get more information from a profssional - maybe see your surgeon sooner?
Strong muscles are important, not only for walking but for many other functions -
do you have physical therapy ? a good one can help so much - maybe some massages might help ..
are you in pain?
please let us know how you are getting on, okay -
big warm hug
renee
Thanks Renee, saw surgeon last month and he said pounding the treadmill not so good for hemiarthroplasty but didn't say I should stop completely. Unfortunately when dealing with NHS you don't really get to see surgeon again but I did because of groin pain. Good news is steroid injection and muscle relaxant drug have eased that pain and meant I do have to see surgeon again.
I'm surmising that just doing sedentary exercises to keep muscle tight would mean no impact on hip so no cartilage damage ergo no osteoarthritis. But you're right, that's probably too simplistic. MS might make it only option in years to come which is why I'm trying to find out what the implications of "joint loosening" are . My problem is I worry too much about future and must try to live for today! Once I have a plan and trust I'm doing the right thing to delay osteoarthritis from eroding cartilage yet avoiding revision because "joint loosening" I'll stop pestering you! I really appreciate all the help this site and you in particular have given me. I do see a physio but he seems to know muscles but not really much about hip replacements. Why didn't I just break a leg? MUCH simpler!
