Symptoms ?

Hi just wondering if the symptoms for this disease can be the same as acid reflux. I started off with lots of problems with my throat not being able to swallow, i changed my diet and cut out all bad things. I went on to brown bread which ended up making my stomach bloat ( i do have ibs tho ) after that every time i ate anything my stomach bloated, i am waiting for test results to see if i have coeliac disease. I know i shouldn't yet but in the last few days i have cut out gluten and yesterday and today i feel great, i am on lansoprazole tho and just coming up to a month on it.

The symtoms can be similar, but they are not the same. In both conditions you can have stomack bloating and an uncomfortable feeling... But in reflux you typically have a sore throat, an acidic taste in your mouth, and chest pain or chest burning. If you start taking acid blockers for reflux, then at the latest your stomack will feel bloated, so I wouldn't recommend them except for temporary use. (Change your diet instead.)

In coeliac disease you'd typically get gas and bad smells (though if you have had it for a long time, you may have gotten so used to these symptoms that you don't think it unusual), you may have diarrhea but not necessarily, and very often you are tired and have anemia. If you have been on a gluten-free diet for a long time, then you will definitely get stomack pains and vomiting if you eat a piece of normal bread, for example. Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks i am getting bloating but i do have ibs and also having problems with my throat and swallowing, i am taking lansoprazole daily and have completely changed my diet, no coffee chocolate cheese, spicy or fatty alcohol and luckily i gave up smoking 10 months ago. i had blood tests for coeliac disease but that was last thursday so i'm guessing it was negative, as my doctors only phones if they find something.

Those are all good changes that you have already made. But if no other problems are found and you continue having bad reflux symtoms (like problems in swallowing), you might try more radical changes in your diet. It's important for you to calm your stomack at first, then you can loosen up gradually.

Maybe you already know, but there's lots of diet advice for reflux on the internet (much of it can help with ibs, too, I believe). Also, someone recently reported that she tried almost everything and then finally gave up sugar and 'empty carbohydrates' completely: no sweets, no sugared desserts or drinks, no white bread, biscuits etc. That's what worked for her. You should definitely also avoid heavy meals with meat.
