My mum was diagnosed with Alzheimers 18 months ago. She has been taking Olanzapine as part of her medication and recently she has become more agitated and this has been increased. Since the increase I notice she is much feebler, sleeps for hours and is unsteady on her feet. When I research this tablet it says its should not be given to patients with dementia related illness! Should I be worried?
Yes You should be worried, there was a documentary on television about elderly people taking Olanzapine and I'm surprised she was given it
She shouldn't be on it, the stuff is a chemical cosh

Don't think she should be on them if she is like that.my young sister of 65 was put on them and she was the same it was to strong for her .but I don't know what can be done sorry not much help as I don't understand or get to grips with this as it new for me .
Alzheimer's or not Olanzapine makes you zombified
My Mother has Vascular Dementia and Altzeimhers. I would suggest you join the Altzeimhers Society for support. My Mother CPN changed her meds when she became agitated to Momentine and she was pretty stable for 18 months. She had heart failure in February and took a bit of a nose dive but has levelled off now. Is your Mother registered with the Mental Health in your local area, they are fantastic help. I have found that Docotrs are pretty useless when it comes to Dementia you need the specialists.
