Taking Tamsulosin 400mg and 5 mg Finasteride daily

Hi have been on Tamsulosin for 3 years which has helped my flow but have seen a decrease in the last 2 months . 4 weeks ago had total urine retention a Catherter was fitted ( ouch) and kept in situ for 10 days during this time the Finasteride was added Catherter removed for a trial all good for 24 hours then UTI arrived various antibiotics for 10 days sample showing clear but still have a lot of discomfort when peeing now after another 2 weeks urine smelling sweet...... but my biggest problem is feeling not well lathargic thick head I'm sure it's the combination of the two drugs as when on the Tam alone felt fine ....; Any ideas  thanks Tim

Sounds like you need some surgery to remove the obstruction and maybe see another Urologist. You could also try Cialis instead of Finasteride, and learn how to do self catherization ASAP so you won't have to worry about going into retention again. A Urologist's nurse can teach you, there are lots of discussions here on this topic.

Been there, fooled myself for years, did not seek out a true specialist, the prostate will continue to grow, I did turn after a nitemare of cathings er visits to my urologist and he finally said you had enough? You ready to be fixed? No easy way to fix it with some pain and sounds like you are getting close to Turp like me. I had friends that said no way, no drugs, you will not be able to have any semen release, who cares! I am past wording about sex, it is easy for someone who is not suffering with this problem to shoot off their mouth, they are not having a catheter shoved up their pee pee, and suffering with it in for a month of hell. Get a sit down, get a sit down wi your specialist and listen to him or her, they truly don't know the size until they get in there with the scope and look close at it. Don't wait like I did and think it will get better

Hi Mike

thanks for that I have an ultra sound booked on 8/8 then Urologist apt at the end of the month

im in the Uk hopefully a Urolift op soon

good advice - but there are other surgeries to consider all over this forum. I think the are coming up with new ones all the time, less invasive and less painful. I know a couple of older guys in their 70s who had Turp and were quite happy with the results. A younger guy around 60 had green Light and was really happy, no sexual side effects at all - apparently at least 20% do have side effects, but with Turp you always have retro ejaculation if that is important. I think there are at least 6 other newer surgeries.

thanks John   Im sure your right

Yes, other possibilities: PAE, FLA, Urolyft, REZUM to name a few. Many discussions on the forum.

Timothy. I had trouble with Finesteride. Acute Retro. Came off. Have been

on Doxocasin for a few years seems to have controlled but have been having

a few problems lately with toilet at night, sex drive nil. Having to cut my liquid

intake on a evening. Just to get reasonable nights sleep. Going to see doc soon

may see if he could change/try Cialis. Hope I don't end in the loop again as I've

had cystostopy a few years ago. Put on Doxacasin as had high blood pressure as well as BHP. Hope things improve for you.

THose two drugs caused me to feel fuzzy, off balance and yes lethargic.  I stopped them after my Urolift in Dec 2015, and even though the Urolift great results lasted only a few months, I never went back on those pills.  I've been cathing since, while awaiting trial results for iTind, here in the US.

The TURP is probably the least-liked option on this forum.  Yes, some have reported good to excellent results, but others are now living permanent hightmares.  CIC (clean intermittent cathing) is a small inconvenience for me, compared with a statistically not insignificant likelihood of permanent disaster!

Please check out this topic on this forum; it has been a help to me and many others.

"feeling not well lathargic"

Finasteride can lower blood pressure and cause the above. You'll get used to it I think.

What is your IPSS score ? If it is not too bad, I would not rush to have surgeries. Give finasteride a chance.

Are you retaining urine ?

I have been on doxazosin for years and just started finasteride 2 months ago. Finasteride seems to help my flow a little so far, but what surprises me is it helps to negate the RE (retro ejaculation) which is definitely caused by doxazosin. Again, I am on it only for 2 months.

Hank

Hi Timothy,

Let me add to the list the self cath (CIC) option. It will immediately fix your LUTS and protect both bladder and kidneys as well as any prostate reduction surgery or procedure. It will also buy you time to explore current or wait for better procedures.

Jim

Hi Graham,

I'm switching from tamsulosin to cialis in the next few days. I'd be interested in how it works for you if you make the switch. Thanks!

Rich

My understanding is that Tamsulosin works on a different part of the prostate, I don't know details but my Urologist told me I can take Cialis together with Tamsulosin to get an even better effect and since my FLA I've been doing that. My bladder was so bad prior to surgery that I still need the extra help - I can still pee OK without Tamsulosin but the stream not as good and I don't empty the bladder enough - I found when I first took Cialis years ago it worked just as well as Tamsulosin etc., but gradually it wore off, or maybe my prostate just got too big. I'll be interested to see if it works for you. You might want to take Tamsulosin every 2nd day for a week while you take the Cialis and wait for it to kick in.

Hi Mike,

Interesting idea. I've actually been weaning myself off tamsulosin for some time now, first every other day, now down to once a week. The nasal side effects are really quite difficult for me to deal with ... there are times when I can't sleep because I'm completely congested and can't breathe. So I'm hoping that the cialis will be effective but not cause congestion (or any other unwanted side effects!).

Were you taking daily Cialis 5mg or 2.5 mg? Every day?

Hi Rich,

I do not have congestion issues from Tamsulosin, maybe the first few days, and maybe some eye irritation - I found if I take it right before I go to sleep I can avoid the sexual side effects somewhat.

Cialis 5mg, I did have some congestion from Cialis when I first started on it. PM me if you need a cheap source from Canadian pharmacy.

Michael

Both Cialis and Tamsulosin can lower blood pressure, so make sure you check with your PCP before taking either (especially both) and make sure it's OK especially if you're taking other bp meds.

Jim

Was that meant for me? I had blood pressure test today, 110/78 they said that was good, maybe because I'm taking those meds :-( What is PCP ?

General comment on smooth muscle relaxers especially if you take two at the same time and possibly in addition to bp meds. PCP=Primary Care Physician

Thanks. I got partial coverage from my Part D insurance company, so I'll stick with taht for now.

That damn catheter will cause those pains trust me I have had enough of them in me before I finally had turp surgery my pee smells awful too now 58 days post, and bladder pain still, pain at the end of peeing, had two uti's since shhitty feeling hope this gets better doc says because of material removed 4-6 months is not uncommon s**t hot baths help ice, heating pad xanax
