Can anyone give there experiences with taking Tamsulosin and the potential side affects with fatigue. I’ve been using it off and on for a couple of years and while I find it helps improve my BPH I do get some days of bad fatigue and lethargy and finding it difficult to pin it down as to whether it’s just a bad day, getting older and life in general or is it the Tamsulosin . Im 61 and do have quite a physical job .
Im actually trying to decide whether to take the offer of having a TURP operation or not or do I find a better medication that potentially won’t have the side affects of fatigue.
ive been taking tamsulosin for a few weeks now as I’ve had a cystoscopy done and I’ve got a tight bladder neck. if I’m honest I feel like it’s make me worse and makes me pee alot more during the day,not sure if it’s from the tablets or my anitial symptoms getting worse.

Background info: I have BPH too. I’m 71. After an episode of Acute Urinary Retention (AUR) about 14 months ago, I started taking .4 mg of Tamsulosin daily. I had no side effects to speak of.
About two months ago I had another case of AUR. After meeting with my urologist, he recommended I take .4 mg Tamsulosin in the morning and .4 mg in the evening (so, total .8 mg daily) and consider having an Aquablation procedure. (I decided to have the procedure, which is scheduled for this coming Friday.)
The .8 mg daily of Tamsolusin seems to make me very drowsy in the evening, and then it’s hard to wake up enough to get out of the armchair and go to bed. Once I do go to bed, I find that I sleep even sounder than usual, and I feel very groggy when I wake up in the morning. The Tamsulosin doesn’t seem to affect my energy during the day, however. I hope this info is helpful.
I guess it’s doing its job , making you pee more and leaving less urine retention.
yes but I’m peeing alot one after the other I didn’t go Because I had an issue with urine flow, I actually went Because I’ve had a stingy sensation at the tip.of my penis for several months which is why I went and got everything tested,if I’m honest I think he gave me tamsulosin as a last resort but hasn’t resolved my original issue
how often are you peeing/frequency etc during the day
if you don’t mind me asking
If Tamsulosin isn’t working maybe that suggest it’s not a enlarged prostate and your diagnosis is correct.
Mine is a different problem to yours, I have an enlarged bladder and retain too much urine after natural voiding and Tamsulosin does help my symptoms. My frequency is quite good usually 2.5-3.5 hours between, I also self catheter every night before bed and now don’t wake up in the middle of the night for a pee anymore.
I haven’t found Tamsulosin makes me drowsy at all and for the most part no symptoms apart from occasionally having a really lethargic weary day and if I’m at work its like going about the day with a rucksack of bricks on your back, very very difficult to get through, I do live a quite physical life with work and cycling and other things difficult to pin down if it’s the pills or me get older.
Im trying to decide whether to have a turp or green light lazer opp myself Tamsulosin helps as does taking a zinc supplement .
Before TURP check out Aquablation. All research is compared to TURP’s.
Know your options…no comment on medications. I was on FLOMAX but did not have fatigue.
I have the option of TURP or green light lazer not keen on TURP seems to have too many side affects and bad experiences so possibly greenlight if I have it at all .
I might be wrong but I think Flomax is another brand of Tamsulosin everytime I get some the name changes . Im trying to decide if I can manage the situation without surgery and the fatigue I find unapcepable but does improve my flow rate .
The worst symptom I had with Tamsulosin was stuffy nose. I started intermittent self catheterization in 2018 so was able to stop Tamsulosin since then.
yes, the main side effects of tamsulosin are
1 fatigue
2 retrograde ejaculation
3 lowered blood pressure
4 dizziness
how many times a day are you taking it? if you’re only taking it once a day try splitting your dose so that it’s twice a day. that may relieve your dizziness and your tiredness. that’s what I do.
on another note:
I if you do not have a high or narrow bladder neck or large median lobe I would go for a prostate artery embolism, p a e. side effects are much less than any other procedure. and it’s not invasive. no sexual side effects.
I take it once a day, cant really split it, its a slow release capsule.
My problem is not really due to an overly enlarged prostate but more a over stretched bladder and I think this is why the urologists said any opp would only have a 50/50 chance of making any difference.
I have an appointment with the urologists this next week and intend to find out more information on meds and long term self cathing .
I self cathed for few months until it was not voiding as required leaving retention which in turn put pressure on my kidneys and their function. Uro conducted an anus scan which showed a median lobe that seemed to obstruct the bladder neck. Consequently decided on Aquablation which was undertaken 4 weeks ago. Recovery has been slower than expected ( TWOC not worked so far) and retain foley cath for another 2 weeks. Uro says not unusual for someone who has had Catheter for some weeks ( mine was installed early August to relieve the pressure and risk to my kidneys). In the Uro’s words my bladder has become lazy and needs to be re-trained. Will be put on Tamsolin 3 days before cath removed. This is supposed to encourage bladder activity.
What is intermittent self catheterization? I too have a very stuffy nose, quite bad at night.
