Taste Loss following start of Atorvastatin/Clopidogrel regime

Diagnosed with Abdominal and Iliac aneurysms a few years ago. These have been monitored on a regular basis using ultrasound scans The size has increased very gradually over time and last year, the Vascular Consultant recommended that I start a course of Atorvastatin + Clopidogrel (80mg + 75mg daily)

Initially I was reluctant to start the clopidogrel due my Diverticular Disease diagnosis. (My wife suffered a rectal bleed on holiday whilst on Clopidogrel and was diagnosed with Diverticular Disease at that time and told to avoid “blood thinners” completely).

After discussions with the Vascular Consultant, I was eventually persuaded to start the Clopidogrel just before Christmas last year.

Since then I have noted a progressive deterioration in my taste perception until now where I am at the point of just eating for “fuel” rather than any pleasure. I can distinguish some tastes like sweetness and saltiness but overall it just seems like I’m chewing cardboard at every meal.

I understand that loss of taste can be associated with both Atorvastatin and clopidogrel and that they may possibly be synergistic in that side effect.

I have referred the problem back to the Vascular Consultant but have had no response as yet.

Anyone out there that has experienced this issue and how it was resolved if possible
