Ted stockings

Hi

can I ask how long all you hippies: I  have had to wear ted stockings.

I have been told 6 weeks. I am now into week 5 and they are driving me nuts. The pain sometimes thro them being tight is bad at times. I ended cutting a pair off the other night as I had had enough. X

Hi

Um, ZERO hours! Exeter thinks they are 'old hat' and don't work that well!

Personally I'd throw them away today!

Cheers

Hi gaynor. I too was told to wear mine for 6 weeks. They drove me nuts too I cremated them a week and 1/2 ago and I am not 6 weeks till next tuesday. The hospital have me on asprin any way and I did a lot of research before going against what my consultant told me. I am fine with the ones that go over the kneee but my hospital do not stock them anymore.

If you are on anti DVT meds I am sure you will be fine with only a week to go without them.Bbut there is always that chance of DVT and more so with a leg op.

If you decide to go without them and you get any problems you MUST get checked for DVT with a doplar scan ASAP.. But at 5 weeks I think you will be fine.

I was told six weeks too but was also told they could be left off for half hour or so for a bit of relief!  I had a pulmonary embolism a couple of years ago so don't want to take any chances.  If yours are too tight I wonder if they have given you the correct size?  they shouldn't be so tight as to cause you pain.

Hailea,

I like you - will you be my friend!

Hi hun

My first right the had to wear for 6 weeks but was told I could leave off a little while each day.

My left the which is only 4 days old I only have them for 2 weeks.

In my hospital they don't use them!

I wore mine for about a week. They are now stuck in a drawer with another pair i had for another op.  I think as long as you are moving about you should be fine, but if insure comtact the hospital or your GP.

I will have to think about it mic smilesmile

Took the hospital 3 days to get round to putting mine on by then the swelling was so bad the sister took them off the next morning i was sent home with a pair but refused to wear them I felt the injections were sufficient. I would also feel at 5 weeks you are moving enough to prevent any clots. Good luck with the rest of your recovery

My surgeon does not believe in them but other patients in same ward had them but they were under different surgeon

Poor you

Agree with you there. I kept mine on for about a week and then stopped wearing them.  Also stopped injections after day 22, as i was running out of places to inject on my stomach without it hurting. Regards Sarah

Hi Gaynor! Yes these wonderful Ted stockings drove me nuts too! But hey your nearly there! At 5weeks! I also had blood thinning jabs into tummy each day with district nurse! I was black and blue! I will be 11 weeks post op on Monday! Regards Amanda

I have only been given rivaroxaban and been told when in bed lying flat on back to do ankle exercises as this helps the circulation and have plenty of walks every couple of hours

Also in hospital I had air bags on my legs which I found very good

I was in the same hospital as Mic.  We were not given stockings to wear, we had ankle pumps on for 24 hours and were given two blood thinner injections and I was sent home with aspirin to take for 6 weeks.  So take them off if they are hurting or irritating you.  You are now into week 5, so just another week should not make much difference.

Many thanks for all your replies

I have been  giving myself nightly injections

I really feel  after reading all your replies I will be safe to take the things off as they are really getting on my nerves.

its it strange how there are so many different methods used by surgeons you would think there would be a uniformed method for us all to follow. No wonder there are so many conflicting stories

thank you all so much for replying to me and helping me reach my decision xxxx

Hi Ann,

so you too happily stocking free but others on your ward not: QUIRKY!

Think as my surgeon most experienced and published many articles he weighed up the pros and cons. He also puts in a wound drain - very unpleasant to remove but no bruising and I bruise easily. Guess I was lucky to have him. He does by do staples either. No doubt all surgeons have their little trade marks

Hi Gaynor

I was same as you, was told to wear them for 6 weeks and take blood thinning tables for 4 weeks.  Came to week 5 and I just took the Teds off.  I am now nearly week 6.

I would honestly say if you have kept them on for 5 weeks same as me, then just take them off and be comfortable.

Regards
