Ten weeks post Operation

I had a THR just over 10 weeks ago.  Not sure about my progress.  Able to walk without aids but I limp and feel pain when I first stand up.  Also the incision  in numb, stiff and if I push down a bit painful.  I had this same surgery in 2008 and at 3 months I was as good as new.  I'm able to drive, get dressed and go to stores but it's difficult to get in and out of the car, put socks on and walk for long periods of time.  Just wondering if anyone has any advise.  Most of what I've read is 1-6 months recovery and everyone is different.  Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Yes we are all different and the fact you've been thru this in 2008 you know that ...10 weeks is very new this for this major surgery.

Hi David, If you are asking whether everything sounds normal - it does to me!  It sounds as if you are definitely on track and I agree that you are looking at 6 months to be completely back to normal.  Don't worry too much!

David

If I'd been doing as well as you after my first THR, I'd have been utterly delighted. Seven years later, it's not much better. Total botch job.

However, now almost 4 wks post other side THR and am astounded at progress.

Each individual/operation is completely different in terms of recovery rate.

You'll find a huge range of experience on here.

Do hope you improve soon.

Thank you for your reply.  I guess being six years older has slowed me down.

Thank you for your reply.  I guess six years as you age makes a difference.

Well we know no two sides will ever be similar..... At 10 weeks I would say nothing too worrying going on. I was on a lot of painkillers still at 10 weeks and my wound area has never really resolved, scar florid. But I recall they found the join buckled after making me pull the body down and pull myself up the bed from day one. That put stress on the join....a real scraping.  Awkward place right under the heaviest part of your torso. Daft without checking it at each scraping in my opinion. God I was scraping that poor area dozens of times a day, pulling against those metal staples. Terrible time, it can only get better so I wouldn't even dwell on it til 6 months at the check up. Let's face it, there's nothing to be done. Surgeons: "wait and see".

Thank you for taking time to reply.  I'm sorry your first surgery was a negative experience for you.  On the other end I'm glad your second surgery is working out better.  Thank you again for the kind words.

Hi David, Don't know where you are, but I'd say you're completely normal.  I'm 10 months on since THR and still sometimes (most times) feel odd when I stand up.

Still can't manage stairs like I used to do. As far as the car's concerned, I use a 'swivel seat' and it's super. It took at least 5 months to put on socks myself and walking long distances is a no-no.  Just take your time and everything will work out for you.  Best of luck

I agree with you.  Surgeons are never wrong and it always looks fine to them.  Thanks for replying to my post.

Hi David,  I would say your doing just fine, if you have pain while walking you use your cane.  I had my second hip replacement one year ago, revised I'm still in physical therapy 3x week.  My first thr was 22 years ago I was alot younger. I think your doing great keep up the good work           Jackie

Thank you for replying.  I'm also 10 months post op.

Thank you Jackie.

Sounds like you are doing great! Be patient and follow all precautions.

Hi David,  best way forward now is to get hands on physio for deep tissue massage and exercises to strenthen muscle and ligament around the hip.  You also need to massage the scar area to break down underlying scar tissue from hardening.  Best is M&S Lavendar Cream. The lavendar extract is supposed to help. I had the advice from a friend who was told by her surgeon to do same after knee replacements.  2 x day.  A lot also depends on how fit you were before the op and YES everyone is different.  But I can say that before the physio I was similar and now after 4 weeks of once a week treatment the difference is amazing. Had my THR 8th Aug. Altho after op I could walk good distances, afterwards my muscles were in knots.  Physio has worked out the deep knots and now muscles are relaxed and with the exercises gaining strength. But on long walks I still take along one crutch.  It is also important to make sure the exercises are done correctly and physio will /should watch and ensure that. Plus pilates excellent with core strength helping that build up and around the hip. Gill (Dorset)

Thank you.

Thank for the advise.

Depend the type of surgery you had anterior or posterior.

The posterior they cut into the muscle, tissue and tendons to get to the hip bone.

That muscle is then sewed up and recovery starts at that precise moment.

The muscle is what you're feeling pain from not the hip. You may feel discomfort and at times pain. When you sit for long periods of time your muscle tend to get stiff. Are you attending physical therapy?

Physical Therapist will aid you towards your recovery. Your therapist will stretch your muscle from your quads, to your hamstrings, to your abduction. Continue the exercises as prescribed and try to attend at least 3 days per week. Oh yeah, ice therapy wrap with towel and place to surgery area for 10 minutes no longer for every hour. Take your meds as prescribed.

I completed therapy and I don't remember what approach my doctor used during my surgery.  Thanks for the advise.
