Terrified all over again

i had my TRHR six months ago this coming Friday and a few weeks ago. Broke a crowned tooth at the gum line. It can robe saved and now I have to have the root surgically removed at the dentist tomorrow. I'm petrified- how stupid that. I've use up all my bravery genes back in February 😱

No you have not. Dentistry is quite difficult to cope with, I find, a different sort of courage needed. I think I worried less in some respects about the hip procedure than my last root filling.

Incidentally do do you need antibiotic cover for such an invasive dental visit?

Hi Catrin, same thing happened to me years ago and I got a Union Dentist  one out all out,so be carefully, good luck Michael.

If it is any consolation my daughter is staff nurse practitioner she has worked on a trauma ward, day procedure dept assisting in operations, now works at local hospital in eye dept, and yet she is absolutely petrified of the dentist she has been known to cry. I think you will be alright, you will find that you are worrying for nothing xx

Hi Maggie,

Im getting erythromycin- a broad spectrum antibiotic although the dentist thought it unnecessary and the consultant was also reluctant to prescribe. There is a major study in progress at the moment on antibiotics and dentistry after hip replacement. The jury is out apparently but with antibiotic resistance on the up i can see their point

Hi,

That is quite understandable.  There is nothing as awful as root work and I'm terrified of the dentist. I've had 2 THR's and am on crutches permanently but can cope with that much better than root work.....what are we like!!!!!

Even my 2nd THR I was terrified. The first one was fine so dont know why I was so scared. You would think that having one done and no problems that I wouldnt worry but I was more scared LOL

Love

Eileen

Yes I have heard of the study. I work in a micro lab, when we get samples from hip revisions we often isolate oral flora!

Oh god dont say that! So its a good thing that im having the antibiotics?

Hi

If your dentist has booked you for a surgical extraction it is likely that the tooth is beyond saving so view the procedure as neccessary to prevent oral bacteria entering the bloodsteam, leaving the dead roots behind is not a wise option when you have hip replacements. Pactice calm breathing before you go in, make sure you have a good meal before your appointment and imagine you are somewhere else- eg on a beach sunbathing and dissassociate yourself from what is going on in your mouth. Be brave, take care xx

It does not happen very often, about twice a year but enough for me to ask for antibiotic cover when I have a tooth root out next time I go

Thanks. Is Erythromycin strong enough? I'm in anxiety overdrive now.

It is not a question of strong enough, it is the range of bacteria that the antibiotic is effective against. Erythromycin is broad spectrum, known activity against a lot of bacteria especially those found in the mouth. That is why the consultant prescribed it
