Terrified of losing health and fitness!

Hi everyone.

i have really benefited from this forum already (I am 6 days post op) and am hoping to get further support

I have always been a complete health nut- going to the gym 6 days a week, competing in fun runs, studying health a nutrition and eating a really clean diet. I am now terrified my life as I know it is over and I will become overweight, inactive and old. Worried that I will overdo things and cause damage too.  I feel like I am no longer in control and already feeling down. Any advice or encouragement would be much appreciated.

You sound a bit fed up, if you are a health nut you should use this experience as a challenge and set yourself a goal in getting over the op as soon as you can. Do your exercises and keep a daily diary of your achievements,  something to look back on when you are back to your normal fitness level.. The more effort you put into it the more you get out of it..think positive and you will recover a lot quicker. Good luck.

If you've been a health nut, continue to be one. I'm a sorta health nut, eat mostly organic, cut out all Breads in my house, drink no more wine, lost my taste for it, and that is just fine.....now I spend that money that went for wine on more good supplements.

My life was exercising and I'm 76 now and all that has changed, but I don't beat myself up and work on acceptance of what is NOW.....

You can do the same and you are only 6 days post op.....you have a long way to go baby....

I'm 4 yrs post op next month and do have complications from the anterior procedure but deal with them....don't like them, but again that Acceptance word...

Fighting it all does nothing, we lose more....so continue on your good path but if you have restrictions, then you will.

I do a lot of meditation and use certain Mantra's to put into my brain...works good in my body and brain.....see ya and talk along the path. j

Thanks- I have begun a blog and I think it will help.

Best wishes to you on your journey

Thanks joy

meditation is one thing I haven't tried but always wanted to- any advice on how to get started?

Cheers

Hi Josie again,  I was so much like you, gym, yoga, very clean diet.  But that is why you will reecover well.  Your body will tell you not to over do stuff, well mine does.  And hopefully you will get old but old and healthy, that is our goal.  Look to a happy and painfree future.  I know you can. xxxx Lorraine

Thanks a million Lorraine smile

You worry too much.  Lighten up.  You may have to stop running (actually, i suggest you do) but you can still eat your nutritious diet.  And about growing fat and old...the fat part is up to you and the old part, welcome to the human race, it is our fate there's nothing you can do abt it

I was interested to see if I'd gain weight post-op as I'm usually pretty much in motion all day and do alot of sports. I actually lost a few pounds in the first 2 weeks because I wasn't hungry. I'm 10 wks out now and sitting just about where I always do. Guess this is my natural weight.

Having said that, I'm still being pretty active but have had to use the cane on my hikes. I just bought a girls bike so I can do easy rides.

Your nutrition lifestyle will come in handy and you'll eventually be able to do the Gym. You'll likely be advised of the negatives of running, up to you after that. Maybe try hiking while you decide on that and get stronger.

Thanks so much for your reply smile

Hi Josie

You are in the early stages.....as for becoming inactive and old ....well inactive...thats up to you {a bit further along the line} Old....we hve no choice LOL....just make sure you are old and healthy. At the moment I would say no gym.....but do the exercises given to you by your physio....6 weeks on you should be able to look at exercising but I was told no high impact....keep it low impact

You're going to be eating well, exercising {not as much as before...take it step by step} and be positive....never think I cant or if you do think I cant do this, in the early stages think but I CAN do it this way....Adapting your way of doing some things.

I dont know where you live or if you were watching TV yesterday morning....an 88 year old lady {I only caught the end of it} was talking and she sat down....on the side of her leg first then onto her bottom and said you notice that I sit down a funny way but thats because I've got 2 metal hips, and pins and scres and a plate in one ankle which has been fractured 33 times She had been a ballet dancer.

She then proceded to show us her" limbering up in the morning" exercises

Sitting on the floor she pushed pboth legs out and did the splits

She then lay down and lifted her leg and pulled it over her head and it touched the floor on the other side, did it with the other leg....apparently she does that and the splits one every morning a few times to loosen up.

AT 88!!!!!!! so if thats not encouragement I dont know what is LOL

I could never do the splits before I had THR's so I'm not going to try now

Eileen

I know!! I saw her too.  It was truly amazing and made me feel a big fat complaining lump!  Like you, I don't think I will be doing the splits but I am a bit more determined to get back to pre-op fitness.

Thanks Eileen

you r fab

would love to be able to so the splits but can't see it lol!

Hi Carole

It was amazing but we should never compare ourselves to others....we are all unique and like I say couldnt do the splits before THR's so certainly not going to try now

Love

Eileen

Hi Josie

It would be great if we could do them but we can ...so what....we do what we can the best way we can LOL.....I get frustrated being on crutches 7 and a half months on but at least if I cant walk very far I can drive....so throw the crutches in the back and off I go

Love

Eileen

Yikes- doing the splits could well equal future hip replacement for many! Really, unless you are a dancer, or participate in Gymnastics kind of sports I kinda think of the splits as another one of those Party Trick maneuvers. Not much practical value for them.

sounds like you have got the post-op blues, love. It's a bit like how depressed you can feel once you have had flu, and it WILL go away. You will quickly get back your life and take charge again. You can already manage what you eat and drink - that won't change just because you have to take it easy for a bit. I would say eat to build health right now, never mind about your weight. And stick to the exercises the physio gives you - you will want to do more, probably, but you also need rest and recuperation.

Thanks for your great reply.

Think I do have a bit of the blues and I did expect this. I know it's just a shirt time in my life and I will get through it both mentally and physically.

Hope all is well with you

Cheers

You have the best attitude Eileen smile

Thanks Josie

I do get frustrated.......I managed my OA and scoliosis OK because they were chronic and I knew I had to find ways around doing things....still things I cant do...like vacumming.....hubby does that for me. Lifting heavy thigs {this is because of spinal problems}

But this fracture leaves me frustrated because it is supposed to heal....the spinal problems arent {if you understand what i mean} Sometimes I'm OK other times I have to have a bit of a rant

Take care

Eileen
