Dear Billy, I am so sad you have given up, you were so close to your op which would have solved a lot of your pain problems. I do hope you will reconsider your decision as you have put so much effort into it.
yes i am sure , they said weeks rather than months , today I was told December at the soonest and they are using sleep apnea as an excuse to delay things

thanks ptolemy but no reconsiderations here I have tried reasoning with them but no compromise , so i will enjoy what I have 
You seem to be angry at the system, but that is not a good reason to decide not to take steps to improve your comfort level. I hope that you are not using this as an excuse because I know you were tentative about the surgery. We all have our fears about the unknown. You are making a snap decision that may affect the rest of your life. Think on it.
hi Billy sorry and sad you’ve had to make this decision .I’d be very angry and frustrated if it was me as well and can understand where you’re coming from. this will be the anaethetist who’s having a wobble cos of your sleep apnoea and I bet theres only a few who will be the anaethetist for you so why the long wait. so dam annoying when you were opting for spinal with no sedation anyway youd only need your cpap machine and oxygen .

Billy, I can see why you would be totally fed up, but don’t rush into canceling your op. December isn’t so far away, only a few months.

dont give up, BILLY! ive has two hip replacements, and I HAVE SLEEP APNEA! WHOEVER TOLD YOU THAT needs to be educated! Go to KECK Hospital and meet the best orthopedic doctors in the world . they will help you.

I think you are missing the point, I went to Glasgow fully prepared for the op no worries and basically went through hell with the Consultant and the Aneathist, I was there excited and ready for the op and no worries until those two guys came out with all the bull.
Apart from two bad hips I do suffer depression / Anxiety but have been feeling really good .
In my opinion Aberdeen Woodend hospital should have investigated what went wrong and resolved it ASAP, Instead they came out with all the crap of excuses. I argued my point to no avail but in June saw a really nice Consultant called Mr Khan who basically said what I did in Glasgow was correct.
I have great faith in this man.
He said I would need a HDU bed , I cant understand why , If i am not going to sleep where is the problem with sleep Apnea?
So 3 weeks ago I was given a Pre assessment and to be honest apart from my hips I have never felt better.
Nhs Grampian have had communications from MPs ,MSP and they dont even reply to them.
Under Scottish law. “Treatment Time Guarantee. The Patient Rights (Scotland) Act advises that once a patient has been diagnosed as requiring inpatient or day case treatment and has agreed to that treatment, that patient’s treatment must start within a maximum of 12 weeks of the treatment having been agreed”
So even having seen Mr Khan in June I should be all sorted by September but as you know they have added 3 months on to this so they are breaking the law they set.
I have even offered to get the operation as a day patient so i dont need a special bed due to sleep apnea.
Today I am going to try and see a GP to see if my health is so bad that I have to suffer all these excuses.
Mr David Duguid MP for Scotland has written to NHS Grampian telling them they are in breach of the " Treatment Time Guarantee.
I have the option of going private but with my job the £10500 price tag is out of my range
Meanwhile and no offence to any one but closer to the winter months the orthopedic department gets busier with Older people falling etc, this will delay things even more.
So if I get a GP today i am going to ask if my health is so bad that this op is unacceptable.
I know of some people who are more obese than me getting the op with no questions asked , I have seen people who do not limp at all get the op no problem and some are going for a second replacement and still walking etc no problem, yet I use a walking stick, have bad trendelenburg gate and taking more pills than i would like due to their side affects yet its ok for me to wait and suffer.
I personnaly think they dont want to give me the op or are delaying for as long as they can due to my complaints.
I understand exactly where uoure coming from Billy. they are covering their arses as high as they can but in doing so its affecting your outcome. my BMI is high and just because the research says theres greater risk to any OP doesn’t mean itll be me being I’ll. in the last 12 months I’ve had a GA for 2 hrs and a spinal lasting 3 hrs and I’ve had no side effects. fortunately for me my hospital are willing to treat people without insisting they loose weight which anyone with severe arthritis which most of us have know we can hardly move cos of the pain so cant exercise to help to loose weight. the other annoying thing is if you fractured your hip theyd have to do surgery no matter what your health is like.
anyway I’m glad you’re going to see your GP to get another opinion but agree pushing you to dec will probably kick u into winter pressures rigmarole and the cancellations that entails. the hospital are being super cautious but it’s a pity theyd not told you all of this at the start and not to have got your Hope’s up for a soon op .
anyway good luck with your GP and its sounds like you’ve got your MPs on your side too

Hi, Just got an email from my Consultants Secretary apparently due to having sleep Apnea I have to have a HDU bed regardless of anaesthetic , I asked if I could be done as a day case and the reply was that a hip replacement is a minimum 3 day stay in hospital. Funny thing is at the Pre assessment the Physio said that if your fit enough you can get home the day after your operation, speak about the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing
think you’ve hit the nail on the head . I found they didn’t all tell you the same thing neither was their information booklet up to date . may not be important to them but to us who only have that as our guide it is.
You must be so angry and disappointed Billy. Hope things work out for you somehow. Talking to your GP is a positive. Perhaps he will advise you to accept the date and then see if it can be brought forward. Although it isn’t ideal and certainly not you want, maybe think of how you will feel when December comes and you are still in pain but could have had the operation then. I understand your feelings about it being winter and there being more pressure on beds then. Just hope something gets sorted for you.
I really do not understand it. If they were happy for you to have a pre med why can’t you go the next step and have an op? They did not find anything new in the pre med they did not know before did they? Your BMI hasn’t changed, they knew you had sleep apnea. What do they gain by changing the date apart from you needing another pre med. It all sounds mad to me. Have you talked to Mr Khan about the situation and what is going on?
Ptolemy I have no idea what is going on Nothing in the pre opp assessment , if there was I dont know about it, My bmi is lower than it was , blood pressure perfect.
There is no chance to talk to Mr Khan, only his secretary.
I still see this as punishment for going to the Ombudsman and complaining to MPs about the system and the way it is being run.
Its scandalous I did not even comment on the fact Mr Khan was looking at were 6 months old, they have never x-rayed me in Aberdeen, I even mentioned my other hip was getting bad but he said it was just compensation pains but I know its in a bad way as well
You may find Mr Kahn’s secretary is as much help as Mr Kahn. I have always found secretaries very helpful and knowledgable. It just seems so strange they gave you a pre med if they were trying to punish you. A pre med is not cheap, particularly if they were planning to do nothing.
