Five weeks since my op and all going well apart from a stiff groin (which I would expect from not being able to move the leg apart from back and forward for years) and the very sore knee.
It's the knee that's holding me back now and I know that others have experienced this.
Are there any exercises that have helped or is it the old give time time thing.
Hi Kev..try the lying on the bed with a rolled up towel under the knees and sort of clenching the knee muscles pressing down to the bed...hold for 5 and repeat in sets of 5... certainly helps!!
Start by sitting on the bed and pulling your toes up to bring your knee into full extension. Hold for a count of 10 and repeat several times. Rest or do the other leg.
Then do the same with the toes but lift your heel about 2 inches off the bed and hold. If that is too easy then slowly swing your leg outwards keeping your heel off the bed and bring it back - repeat up to 10 times.
Do the rolled towel under the knees one.
When you get bored try outlining the letters of the alphabet with your toes just above the bed.
DO NOT DO TOO MUCH TOO SOON.
It is better to do a few reps several times a day at first till you establish your level and then build up. If you are too stiff next day then you have overdone it.
You can also do static quads, tensing the big muscles on the front of your leg while you are standing around, queues etc can be put to use. I've had knee probs ever since I was at school so I'm an expert at fitting in boring strengthening exercises into boring stretches of life.
is this nearly your 6th week Kev...have you got you review soon?..that was when I was told to ditch one crutch and try driving....starts to feel like real life again.....
