The dreaded sore knee

Five weeks since my op and all going well apart from a stiff groin (which I would expect from not being able to move the leg apart from back and forward for years) and the very sore knee.

It's the knee that's holding me back now and I know that others have experienced this.

Are there any exercises that have helped or is it the old give time time thing.

Still cant get over no pain in the hip though

Kev

(The inpatient one)

Not sure where my lengthy reply went but  same stage and have the same problem.

Think its it's down to poor mechanics pre op.

Trying very hard to walk correctly so have to take it very slowly and have started seeing a private Physio.

Looking forward to hearing of any good exercises.

You might just need some physio have a word with your GP or contact the hospital.  My GP has been great and has sorted some Physio for me before my op,

Hi Kev..try the lying on the bed with a rolled up towel under the knees and sort of clenching the knee muscles pressing down to the bed...hold for 5 and repeat in sets of 5... certainly helps!!

Chris

Will give that a go. Thanks Chris

Start by sitting on the bed and pulling your toes up to bring your knee into full extension.  Hold for a count of 10 and repeat several times. Rest or do the other leg.

Then do the same with the toes but lift your heel about 2 inches off the bed and hold.  If that is too easy then slowly swing your leg outwards keeping your heel off the bed and bring it back - repeat up to 10 times.

Do the rolled towel under the knees one.

When you get bored try outlining the letters of the alphabet  with your toes just above the bed.

DO NOT DO TOO MUCH TOO SOON.

It is better to do a few reps several times a day at first till you establish your level and then build up.  If you are too stiff next day then you have overdone it.

You can also do static quads, tensing the big muscles on the front of your leg while you are standing around, queues etc can be put to use. I've had knee probs ever since I was at school so I'm an expert at fitting in boring strengthening exercises into boring stretches of life.

have  emailed you a link to a good leaflet I found...some exercises for you!!

chris

Thanks for all your replies.

Started doing some of the exercises yesterday and had a relatively pain free walk this afternoon.

Marvellous smile

Good,  Keep up the good work - I'm still working hard on my abductors and it is boring but worth it.

Just my backache now...I think its probably cos I've been limping for so long and now walking normally...well almost

Chris

Talk about walking normally I totally forgot I use crutches earlier and took a step. Wont do that again in a hurry. Gave the family a laugh though. smile

is this nearly your 6th week Kev...have you got you review soon?..that was when I was told to ditch one crutch and try driving....starts to feel like real life again.....
