The honest truth about bunion operations

I had bilateral bunion surgery last Thursday and can honestly say that I hardly have any pain. I was scared off before the operation by many gruesome stories on the internet and wish I had not read them all. My op was carried out under general anaesthetic with an ankle block, and I was pain-free for two days due to the block. I now have minimal pain, ie pins and needles, some minor  throbbing, and nothing that cannot be helped by taking ibuprofen or paracetamol. First two days I also took codeine but no longer need it. Feet are in plaster casts and special shoes and I can walk around with crutches. No swelling either, but I do ensure that I rest with feet up for several hours a day. Have also been able to have showers thanks to special plastic 'wellies' over casts. If anyone wants any further information, please let me know and hopefully I can reassure you that is really is not that bad :-)

That is a good positive story. I wish you well with your ongoing recovery.

thanks! I hope I can reassure others

Glad to hear you are having a good recovery. I had surgery 8 weeks ago and had the plaster slipper on for six weeks. I saw my surgeon today and he is happy with my recovery. You don't hear of many people on this site who are in plaster, it seems most wear a special wedge shoe. It looks to me that the plaster is a better option. Good luck with your continued recovery.

Thanks Christine, and to you too> I went with my surgeon because I liked the idea of having my feet in a forefoot cast so that no-one would bump against it or anything would get dislodged. He has also used dissolvable screws which more or less disappear within a year. I liked that too - no alarms going off at the airport. I hope you continue to make an excellent recovery. What shoes are you wearing now?

Wow, a very positive outcome.

I on the other hand have not ! I need to have another toe operation as my bunion ectomy in December was not a success and have been in constant pain since 😒

oh dear Terri, I am sorry to hear this. Did you have several toes done? I only had my large toes done. Of course I have not seen the outcome of my op yet, but I hope it will be good. I just wanted to share with everyone that the pain is not as bad as reported on the internet sometimes. I am amazed how little it hurts.

Hi

I just had my left big toe operated on, the bunion is still there as only a little was shaved off because the de-generation of the bone.

I didn't think the op went well because the pain is still there as well as the bump, more surgery !
