the price of multifocals

I am 69 years old and am scheduled to have both eyes done early next year. The question I have is I have is about the price for the multifocals: Does that differ by office and what they think they can charge? Or does price vary by region of the country? I wouldn’t mind traveling to another close by state to save a few thousand. My office charges $2900. They gave no other info on what type or brand.I’d love to go without glasses but on a Social Security only income they are out of my price range.

Your other option is to consider a monovision solution where one eye is corrected for distance, and the other eye is under corrected by about -1.25 D. The less expensive monofocal lenses would be used in each eye. They also have fewer issues with night time flare and halos around lights. If you are considering monovision it is best to simulate it first using contacts to see if you like it or not, and how much under correction that you prefer. The usual range is -1 to -1.5 D. Doing a contact simulation does require sufficient remaining vision to give it a fair trial.
