The Wirral - UK

Hi All

Anybody out there waiting / had their THR that live on The Wirral here in the UK - willing to share thoughts / worries / happiness etc etc

I have my date as 9th November - as much as I am looking forward to an increase in quality of life - the date and the operation fills me with apprehension

Look forward to hearing from you

Best Wishes & Good Luck

Good Morning Dave and welcome to this wonderful forum - you will find the best support, understanding and a wealth of information, advice and tips here - all laced with a great sense of humor as well ... I live in Holland but I believe that our worries, concerns, happiness, victories etc. are universal.....we are all in different stages, pre-op and post-op, so go ahead and start asking your  questions -

big hug ...

Hi Dave...used to live in Irby...down the East Lancs now in Atherton..but frequent visitor back to Wirral......where are you having yours done?

Hi Dave I'm in Norfolk and am 3.5 weeks post op. all the shaes concerns etc are the same all over the coutry so welcome to this forum xx

Hi Dave, we came to the Wirrall a few weeks ago to see the three queens, great day out. My op is scheduled for mid July, I am just looking to the other side of it, had my pre-assessment on Friday. I have found this forum a mine of information.

Best wishes from Derek

Hi Dave, I live on the other side in Liverpool. My date is 30th July in Broadgreen hospital. I'm glad to see the light at the end of the tunnel but am becoming rather nervous too!

Hi crissy, my sister used to live in Irby many moons ago.

I am in Spital and the operation is going to be at Murrayfield with Mr Donnachie

have you had yours completed/ How long agao - hope all is great for you

HI Derek

Good luck for July, when you are up to it please tell us how you are.

Glad you enjoyed The Wirral and the queens

Hi Patricia

Good luck for the 30th - Broadgreen is wonderful - everythig will be good for you

I am over at Murrayfield - like you - light at the end of both tunnels !

Yes...min was Feb 14 so absolutely 1000% OK now....I was on this forum from Day1 almost like a blog! Any questions just ask....I used to have a horse behind the Basset Hound and used to ride in Murrayfield grounds before they built it! I had my op in a BUPA  hospital in bolton and it was great....especially the food...oh and the hydrotherapy pool for physio afterwards....anything in particular your worried about?

Hi Crissy - that was a fast reply - thanks

I guess its the journey into the unknown, lack of independance and the fact that I am getting old / comparing to what I used to do - all getting me down

22 years in the Forces, Rugby at a high level, running up and down mountains etc etc

Will I be able to support my wonderful wife and family - is a great concern to me

The pain side doesnt bother me now or during / after the operation - I will handle that due to my upbringing & background - at the moment I grin and bear the pain and am still working - my big concern is the uncertain future and what I will / will not be able to do

A work colleague of mine some 28 years youger than me had the operation 2 years ago, it appeared to go well, but now back to square one and is under going another operation in th near future.

Perhaps I am "too proud" a man - perhaps other men felt the same before their operation - I cant bear the thought of not being able to look after my family - my wife having to "attend me" - more so me not being there for my wife - I know hopefully it will be a memory by Feb of next year but I worry about the time between Nov and Feb - am I being stupid? am I over thinking things?

Any views? more than welcome

Hi Dave...I was 63 last year and working full time...still am t least until end of July...I had 12 weeks off and really did need all that to get fit enough. Best to stay positive don't dwell on what could go wrong..the vast majority of THR ops are 100% successful. The recovery was fine and the hip pain is just gone! Takes a few weeks for scar and muscles to stop hurting but you sound like a tough guy so you'll be fine...The time goes so quickly you'll be back doing everything you did before...though maybe not the rugby...who did you play for?

HI Crissy

You are slightly older than me at 59

Rugby was stopped a few (?) years back ha ha - I was in the milatary so nothing professional - but it still hurt like hell ha ha

I played for Port Sunlight over 40s when I came out of the forces.

My hip started in 2007 but following an authscopy went great for years however the slippary slop started again Feb last year.

I finally gave in (sic) last month and have organised for an injection 6th July to get me past my 25th anniversary in Sept and op in Nov

Hi Dave .... well ... that is a valid concern - one of the hardest things to have to depend on others -  but have you also realized that people want to be there for you as you are always there for them????  I didn't, until my friend told me what a bad friend I was because I didn't allow her or anyone to help me - it made her feel terrible - it wont' be forever you know .... reading your story you might be upo and running within a week and be one of those mircacle stories ..... so please, allow your self to receive so you can continue to give .... good night

HI renee,

Thanks for your positivity - I hope you are correct and I am sure that my family will help me

Hope you are well

Dave

Hi Dave

I live in Neston.  My friend had her hip done by Mr Donnachie a couple of years ago and swears by him.  I asked for him when I was due to get mine done last December, but he wasn't available.  I ended up with Mr Phillipson at the Grosvenor Nuffield in Chester and it went very well.

I do have a strong recommendation for you.  After my op I had no infections or pain on the op site to speak of, not even any bruising. However, over the following months I struggled with aches and pains in the muscles around the hip and back and nerve pain down the operated leg.  After putting up with it and trying physio etc for months, I was eventually told about a lady called Anita Bowden who is a sports masseuse based in Little Sutton and Little Neston.  She has magic fingers!  She sorted out all the muscle problems and nerve niggles that were keeping me awake at nights and preventing me from walking normally. I am now able to truly appreciate the wonder of being post-hip operation without the arthritic pain I put up with for years.  I'm 52, by the way.  Anita can also help pre-op - she says she wishes she'd got to me before my hip got as bad as it did and started impacting on other joints due to the way I was walking.  Seriously, give her a go, she's amazing.  Her number is 07975 658911.  I promise, I'm not on commission or anything, I just know she made a huge difference to my recovery.

Hi cariad62

Thanks very much - will answer fully later can you check that number please - just got a lady in Scotland !

Hi cariad

Lovely part of the Wirral / Cheshire, if you can please check that mobile number for Anita Bowden I would be grateful

I have the exact pains you refer to and have had them some months now and at times they are worse than my hip pain.

I also get real and I mean real bad craps in my opposite lower leg - the body is a strange beast !

I am 59 so we are not a million miles from each other (sorry)

I am certain my gait is well out of true so your magic "friend" would be a real bonus, hopefully will hear from you tomorrow - I am here so late as I am still on nights

Good luck for the future

Dave

Oops! Sorry to the Scottish lady and you...it's one digit out: 07875 658911. I hope it works out for you.

I read the the rest of the thread and wanted to also reassure you that it's only really a couple of weeks that you need a lot of help..the main thing for me was help getting the anti-blood clot 'socks' on and off. They have to be tight, obviously, and it's impossible to bend for a while after the op, so you will need help with them. After 2 weeks I was able to do most things for myself, but found my husband and kids wanted to help, so I let them!

No problems with the number

I managed to track Anita down via google and she sent me an email overnight and we have spoken this evening - all sorted meeting her when I return to Wirral

The socks now are my worst nightmare never mind after the op !!

I am sure my wife will assist .........???
