Thigh pain after hip replacement

Hello Kimberley!  I have been so reassured by your post as I am really concerned about this thigh pain..I had the anterior approach replacement in September and in 2 weeks I was back to normal and thought it was almost miraculous!  BUT 3 mnths after the operation I atsrted getting this pain, itching and burning on the outside of my thigh..I went to another surgeon who said if it's infection it doesn't proceed quicky and to wait for a year before having a bone scan, which is the only way to test for infection.... I am very anxious as I've had 3 other operations and each time I had infections but none of them concerned BONE.I sincerely hope it's what you describe and I AM a little more hopeful after reading about your experience.Thankyou and take care.X

From my experience, there are ways other than bonescan to detect infection, and they include blood tests and hip aspiration. In aspiration, they use a needle and fluroscopic guidance to take fluid from around the ball of the prosthesis and the hip bone. Then the fluid checked for infection. With blood tests, they look at results that indicate inflammation, which points to infection. Those tests are erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and plasma viscosity (PV).

I had the anterior hip replacement done 9 weeks ago and I am doing great except, like you, when I overdo it, I have the pain which feels like it is in the incision site, but to the right of it (right hip), it's still numb.  And I occasionally get those twinges of pain, like the nerves are trying to reconnect.  I did quite a lot last weekend in preparation for Easter company and my hip is still achy, especially after I sit for a while and then stand up and start walking.  It's very painful for a while but seems to get better with every step.  And they are doing the left hip in July!  Ugh.

I am 5 months post op of right hip replacement. I too have had thigh pain and have been concerned about the femoral stem pain. I have been doing lots of stretching and weight training and may be doing too much. I will be having bilateral knee replacement in October so I am trying to get as strong as I can before then. I am 48 yrs old. Good to hear this pain is normal and hoping it subsides.

Hi

48 is really young . DO YOU HAVE A GENETIC PREDISPOSITION?

I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO GET AS FIT AS POSSIBLE BEFORE SURGERY.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

WILL LOOK FOR YOUR REPLY.

P.W.

Soxy..just be patient. Make notes of your improvements...like today my leg only felt like 50 lbs instead of 90 lbs..lol..

I could walk side wats for 10 steps without an aide..

Soon the events will change..

We forget..it is major surgery..not an "oil change"...

Positive thinking and noticing the improvements are powerful components to better days ahead!

Give it a year..give it two...improve daily ! It's better than carrying around a deteriorating hip..and living on meds as we sink into unhealthy aging!

Hugs.

Pilots wife!

I was very active in sports (volleyball and a hurderler) so lots of jumping and pounding on my joints! I live in upstate NY and our weather has been horrible this spring (raining and damp) not a good combo for Arthritic joints. I find heat is the most soothing for my knee pain.

It actually sounds more like Sciatica but I would check with your doc just to make sure.

My doc told me that if I were having any sort of pain while doing any excerise, I was to stop that exercise and rest.

I am 2 years out and still have occasional thigh pain mostly on the side of my thigh. I had the anterior/lateral approach.

I still have a few quirks with the hip, but overall, it's been a success.

It does take time so don't push yourself!

I am 59 yrs old and had a total hip replacement four and a half years ago and I recovered fine and had no problems at all . I started a Pilates class 6 months ago and I have started with a pain in my thigh when walking , could this be due to the Pilates or could it be a stem injury?

I had my anterior THR in mid Jan 2017 (Stryker Accolade II, Mako robot for acetabular component placement).  I started getting this anterior mid-thigh pain also.  It was a bit lower than the end of the stem so it may NOT be from this.  Only when standing or walking (esp. loading and unloading parts of gait cycle), not when sitting.  Sometimes it feels more like a deep muscle spasm. It does temporarily respond to roller massage (!).  Still trying to figure it out.

I hear you.  Spin class is fun, but I pay for it for 2-3 days afterward.  The hip stress is relatively low, but my operated side doesn't like it yet.

It has been 6 weeks for me since I had anterior approach. I am doing well walking without aids some days better than others. But I also hurt in my thigh down into my knee still. I also every night while trying to sleep have thigh n lower leg n now achy feet. Doctor has me on gabapentin for nerve pain now I also have to take tramadol not helping, I am using lots of ice. I go back to work in 2 weeks hopefully this stops I need my sleep. Also hurts to drive to long. But alot better than pain before surgery. I had arthritis bone on bone bee do cartilage left.

I never had any thigh pain after the operation four and a half years ago . I have just started with thigh pain ,wondered if it could be due to Pilates  which I started 6  months ago ?

Hi Jackie, I had my anterior done in 2008 and I have pain in the back side of my hip (actually my behind) when I sit for too long especially driving still to this day. I believe that it is just a symptom of the hardware resting against the nerves and muscles inside the body and there really isn't much that can be done about that except to get out and stretch as often as possible. I also ahve the front thigh pain when it is extrememly cold out but that too is from the titanium hardware that is going down the inside of the thigh. But the pain of this is nothing compared to what I suffered for over 7 years with bone on bone grinding of no cartiledge and bone spurs with arthritis so maybe I have just talked myself into believing it is all normal. I hope you feel better soon and yes the pain does ease up most definitely the longer you excercise and do your PT. Being completely pain free? I don't know if that ever happens but I know for me I am as close to that as possible.

Hi Kimberley.I had a hip replacement a month ago today. The pain in my thigh area is almost unbearable. Don't know how much longer I can take this. I also have a very bad knee on the same leg. Doctor said he will have to do surgery on it after I get on my feet from the hip surgery, It's good to hear the thigh pain is normal. Thanks so much

I had total hip replacement four months ago and I have the same pain as Soxy which started about a month ago and it radiates down my leg.  Very painful most of the time, especially at night.  I did not have this following the same surgery on the other hip last year.  I am seeing my doctor on Friday and hopefully he will have some good news. In some ways this pain in actually worse than the hip pain before surgery.

Hi Soxy, and all those who shared experience in this forum. I found it quite comforting to read as I had total bilateral hip replacement in NYC May 1st, almost 8 weeks ago, and I had been recovering amazingly well, given 'fit-to-fly' ( back to my Caribbean home) only 23 days after surgery. I was doing great- an anomolie here- as I had anterior approach- they only perform posterior here so my local PT and GP had never seen a patient recover so fast. Being skeptical they put me thru much testing before they cave me 'fit to drive' 5 weeks out. I was doing my exersizes daily, and when they said my scars were healed enough I went back in the plungepool for easy exersizing daily (unfortunately the ocean has bee TOO ROUGH-for weeks now- waiting for it to calm back down before sea soaking). I went back to the gym one day. I was up and down our 17 stairs, one after the other ( not step, samestep, step) 5 or so times a day- and ya know what happened on a simple walk one day? OUCH! addictors! ouch psoas! Yep- I overdid it. And I have been in pain for over a week now, getting very stressed about it- like I ruined everything- like I'll never get better. The pain moves all around- butt, scar area, inner thigh- I get tingly nerve pain, sharp pain sometimes, it feels like my hardware " shrunk- my hips are so tight sometimes- plus- the barometer has been dropping as hurricane season starts- its been blustery and I wonder if I've become one of those people that can predict rain in her legs. I had run out of pain meds ( Oxy) and had to get more ( fun fact- they don't sell Oxy on this island, so-got Panadol). I am thankful for everyone here being reassuring that in time the pain will subside. I'm a bit of a hypochondriac ( hubby said) because I experience a setback and I think I've undone the whole procedures benefits- but that's not true. I am strong, only 15lbs overweight, 56 years old, and had prepared for this procedure by losing 40 (now 30) lbs and strength training. I am proactive in my recovery, have a great team locally, had an excellent surgeon and staff at HSS so, thanks for the chill pill and I hope we all are dancing in pain free joy in a few more months!

What was your outcome? I am having this pain as well.

Hi -- I had a posterior THR 17 weeks ago and I am still experiencing the same problem I've had since the surgery. My recovery went as well as can be expected and do sleep and sit with no pain. I can walk unaided, with minor thigh pain, only after doing my physo but -- anytime I sit or lie down I am unable to put any weight on my leg again in order to walk,  without doing a weight shift from good leg to bad leg, tightening leg muscles to accept my weight. I have gone to my surgeon four times to address this problem but have not received any support nor does he seem to even know what I'm talking about. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this -- my xray and CT scan shows that everything is normal.

hi sub,

warm welcome to the hippies forum where personal exeriences and stories are shared ... I am so sorry to hear about your ongoing pain ..is it real pain or more discomfort -

either way, it is worrying you and hampers you in your daily living ...

17 weeks sounds like a long time but isn't really after such a major invasive surgery -
