Things Not to Freak Out About After Hip Replacement

I found this on the Joint Replacement Institute website.  I wish I had known some of these things before now (I'm at 8 weeks).  I thought I'd share them with you because some of us have had questions about these very things.  I'm sure there are more things for us not to freak out about and I will share them if I find them.  Maybe I should have entitled this "Things I Wish My Doctor Had Told Me before THR."

NORMAL THINGS ABOUT YOUR NEW HIP:

Clicking noise with hip motion

Skin numbness near or around your incision

Swelling around hip, knee or lower leg

Warmth around hip

“Pins and needles” feeling at or near your incision

Dark or red incision line

Increased bruising if on Coumadin

Hope this helps if someone is worrying about these things.

Happy Hippies!

How long are these things 'normal'?

Thankfully I haven't had any of these almost 3 weeks post op. But that's a great reassuring post. Thank you. Maybe when I go to using 1 crutch I'll feel more of those symptoms & it won't be so scary after reading that post. Thank you again Linda x

Thanks Linda. My op site is so hot. It's not infected but just very actively healing. Ice helps.

Oooh that's so good to know! I had staples out on Monday and I've noticed since then that my scar area is very warm. Yesterday especially I was a little concerned, it doesn't seem as bad today and now I've read this I shall relax. It's quite nice to have a hotspot in this weather 😂

excellent post well done Linda

That's a great question!  I think it would be a good idea to take this list in to my next visit with the surgeon and ask if this is only in the first three months or so of if it's forever.  My hip was very hot and swollen for several weeks and that has subsided but at almost 9 weeks, the skin around my incision is still pretty numb.  My incision is stil red and raised.
