Thought it was sciatica but screws broken and plate moved in THR

Hi

feeling desperate . I have a hip revision in April I was slow to get going but finally after 7 months went back to part time work. Then had a few very busy weekends , slept in parents settee due to their illness. Started awful pain . Long story cut short I thought it was sciatica , but had X-ray via GP , total shock told screws fractured and plate moved in my THR . I have not got a clue what this means.  Original surgeon seeing me in new year, but the pain is getting worse daily. Trying to get up from sitting or trying to sit causes pain like I have never had, even with taking morphine.

Any my suggestions or helpful clues or anything as I can't seem to find out what this all means for me.

Thank you you all Crisps

I'm very sorry that this has happened and having recently had a hip revision which has to date been successful, I'm not aware of what function a plate and screws plays in a hip revision. That said I would urge you to see your doctor urgently or if possible your surgeon. I would not wait around if I was in your situation.

All the best, Richard

See a surgeon. Why do you have a plate and screws with a THR?

Oooh that sounds painful .... My acetabular socket (probably what has been described to you as a plate) is held in with two screws, and if that's floating free it will be pinching against your pelvis - so not good.

If that is what it is, I think you need to get in touch with the surgeon immediately as you could be damaging the socket in your pelvis.   That would probably be as bad as dislocating.

Good thinking Graham! Yes it needs immediate attention like now!

Cheers Richard

I've just looked back at your previous posts. You have been having an awful time. I agree you need to see someone as soon as possible. I suppose with all the surgery you have had over the years there wasn't enough bone for the screws to hold. I just hope they sort you out quickly. If you can't see your own surgeon it might be best to go to A&E.

Good luck

Mike

Hi

I was surprised when the specialist said he would see me in the new Year , was surprised to be left like this.

I think the plate and screws relate to the reattachment of the greater trochanter , but not sure , GP did not have X-ray just a urgent summery sheet.

Thank you for getting back to me

Think it's for the greater trachanter re- attachment but not actually sure.

Last weekend when I still thought it was sciatica I wanted to go to A&E but then thought how busy they all are and that's surely I should be able to manage sciatica. But I will go if anything changes at all or can't manage the pain. My problem is I have operations outside of Wales , and because of previous operations, I need the super specialist not available at my local hospital . I would be scared they had a go. However not thinking clearly as still in shock I think.

Thank you

Dear Crisps

It's obviously a difficult time of year to suddenly find yourself in such a difficult and painful situation but to be faced with having to wait and not having an actual date to see your surgeon is crazy.

I would get myself into A+E if only to put pressure on your surgeon!

Best wishes, Richard

Dear Crisps

I do understand your reticence to put yourself in the hands of less experienced people when specialist help is preferable.

I recently moved from S. Wales to England and it does complicate matters and one does have to be prepared to fight and travel.

I wish you all the very best in finding the best track for you given how you feel and the time of year.

Cheers, Richard

Crisps

I agree you may not ant someone less experience to operate on you. But A&E may at least be able to make you more comfortable.

Mike

Hi, I  hope you are getting through this rough time. It was such bad timing at Xmas when everything shuts down.

Hope you get it sorted as soon as possible.

Tony

Hi Tony

thank you for the support, finally got hold of consultants secretary only to be told my appoitment is 28th Jan , I was once again so shocked. This afternoon saw GP who was surprised I still at home awaiting help. More medication given gabapentin which hopefully will calm my nerves down.

Kay

hi Michael

Thank you for the support, managed to see GP today new medication given, he as shocked as me to still be at home wondering what's going to happen. My appoitment for consultant is 28th Jan .

My head is still spinning, as I returned to work in November and always my biggest fear is not being able to work, but it's getting scary as I can't just sit at home for a month waiting to see consultant. Then clearly I will need another operation with time off yet again.

It does make me laugh how we are suppose to manage, chronic conditions and maintain ourselves in work, which I do want to do, but I am ruled by awaiting medical professionals, mwhoose remit is different again.

Oooppsss off load done.

Kay x

Hi Kay,

My thoughts are with you.
