THR 10 weeks post op

Hi is there anyone that could tell me if i should be able to walk further now that before my hip replacement without being in extreme pain.

Hi is it only your hip that had osteoarthritis ???  I had it in my hip but also my spine , neck and foot and that's all I know of , and to tell you the truth my hip is painless now but my lower back is worse than it was before my thr .

Hi Retiredlass

Am in my 13th weeks post op i do get some pain in my Groin when walking for around 30mins or so. I have to stop and rest up before start walking again.

You should know what's best for you as everyone pain leavel is different.

Good Luck.

No i have arthritis in all my major joints. I have been to docs and she said its early days yet, but i am in pain from both hips and back whenever i walk. I am still using one crutch which i was using before the op, but cant seem to walk for more than 10 mins without being in excrutiating pain.

Yes I found I could walk further a from about 7weeks without the really bad pain I had before op but I was still using one stick when out although not indoors  now 14weeks still use stick when out   ie shopping but  can walk dog ect and local walking as normal only pain I get is on getting up after sitting takes a while and a few steps to get going, feels painful and slightly stiff I was advised to take ibufen for a while am trying that now.

I am 70 and feel glad to have had it done and think that we all recover eventually .good luck if it's really bad  I would maybe ask doctor again .

Hi am 43 and can't even do simple housework because of the chronic pain in my lower back and neck , I have had to stop working because of the pain , I actually end up in hospital about 3 times a month because my back goes into spasm and I can't move , when I attempt to walk even with my stick I have to stop constantly , I've had needles in my back trying to help but they didn't do a thing , am at the chronic pain clinic now to see if they can help , I take 100mg morphine a day and also oramorph every hour and that just deadins it for a while . Go back to your doc if your worried about anything .

Hi Retiredlass

You say that you have arthritis all over.....it could be referred pain

My story......My first THR ......I was managing without any walking aids except a folding stick in my bag that I used if necessary.

After the THR.....I gradually got worse mobility wise but I have OA in hips, ankle neck and lower spine.....also kypho scoliosis in back {that is a C shaped curve}

So as far as I can gather the pain was coming from other places......even if I hadnt had the THR I would have got worse

The 2nd one was different.....4 weeks after the op I fractured the greater trochanter bone...Hospital could do nothing for me but said it would heal itself eventually.....I'm still on crutches 4 and a half months later!!!!!

I've now been diagnosed with osteoporosis which is why they say the bone fractured so easily.

So......I think it is referred pain in your case.

Hi retiredlass, I am 12 wks post-op and I am still in excruciating pain but in my back this time! My hip is good, no pain there other than a slight discomfort from my tendon in my groin. I can walk fair distances now buthave to resort to painkillers before I go. I am still doing my exercises regularly and will be starting swimming on Monday. Hopefully this will help but after an MRI scan before op showed osteoporosis in spine my doc said I may still feel pain in back if hip replacement doesn't help it. I like to believe my PT who says - keep going and one day you will get up from a chair or bed and be pain free!

Isnt it nice to have one positive medic  LOL   Believe the one you like.

My physion is strict and would have me keeping to the 90degree angle the rest of my life {2 THR and one fracture} My consultant is the opposite.  Listen to your body......then he said you used to do seated zumba? Yes...Get yourself back....it will do your good...I prefer to listen to him  LOL

You will be walking with a different gait now so the other joints will have to get used to it.  I can walk further than I could pre-op but distance limited by arthritis in knee (TKR at end of month).  Other knee is now more clunky so I am hoping that it settles down.  OK it will need doing sometime but I was hoping for a couple of years off surgery.  Hope your docs & therapists can come up with something to help.

Thank you so much for your comment, maybe it is referred

Sorry pressed wrong button before i had finished. You maybe right i have severe pain in the lower back anyway and my knees are knackered, the consultant said the thr would not cure my other problems but that i should be able to walk a bit easier. This does not seem to be the case.

Thank you for your comment, it is true i feel as if i am walking differently. So maybe you are right. I will keep on trying to walk a little further, but at the moment i am experincing severe pain. So back to taking pills.

Thanks for your comments, you seem to be worse than me. I am not on real morphine yet but i do take tramadol 4 times a day. I know what it feels like when your back goes into spasm, mine has 3times and its horrible. I will keep going to my docs until i get some sensible answer. Thanks. Get better soon.

Hi, I was told that if I had the 2nd THR it MIGHT help my back pain ...but it hasnt

sad

Eileen

My opinion is if you need meds....take them.  Icf they relieve the pain and help you do things you couldnt do if you were in pain without them...take them!! Try to reduce them bit by bit if possible.

Eileen

Will do. Hopefully it will all start to settle down after more time.

O definately u should be able to walk farther and better than before THR. once UR finished with rehab contine exercises u learned in PT... Keep UR tendons & muscles strong to support UR hew hip.. And o yeah the most important exercise is keep up those butt scrunched... In a few months u will be walking and strutting UR stuff! LOL

HEALING THOUGHTS SENT UR WAY.smile

Thank you for your thoughts and wishes. I am still trying to do all my excercises and they seem to be going well, its just the walking that seems to create pain.
