Im new here and looking for some help. Ok, I'm 56 and had THR nearly 4 weeks ago.
Two things:
1) did anyone 'feel the joint' almost when you sit down? I'm aware sometimes when i sit down (not lay down) that I've got the foreign joint in there. Does this sensation last long?
2) i was on crutches for 2 week, then attended physio at the hospital, given sticks and told that when i felt ready i could use them. I started with 2 then within 3 days decided that i could manage with 1. I went out (down 5 flights of large stairs) walked about quite a bit and had lunch. When I stood up it was like a horrible opposite back pain, operated side knee and hips pain and huge soreness all over.
Im now back on 2 crutches and feet up.
I'm aware of the 6 week back to work allowance. I'm a teacher. I'm worried I've pulled or strained something.
Do things really move along a pace healingwise once the 4 weeks post op time comes along as I'm concerned.
You are still really early in your healing. You really need to be doing short distances with one to begin with as it's tiring when you are concentrating on walking without a limp. Use two if you are limping. My OS told me to use two until I felt comfortable with one then build up distances slowly but surely. You get all sorts of aches and pains in the first few weeks and they are usually your hip telling you you've done too much. Make sure you keep up your meds even if it's Tylenol / Advil which I was using for the first 5/6 weeks.
You will get there although 6 weeks back to teaching is quite bold. I am 8 weeks and feeling good, no crutches and slowly building up muscle strength but I can't imagine going back to teaching yet! (I teach little ones so it's pretty physical though!)
Hi Patsy. The worst thing I was told was that 6 weeks I would be more or less back to normal. I am a fit woman who recovers well and gets on with things.
I went back to work as a social worker in a fostering team after 10 weeks. Fortunately I can work my own hours. Just as well given it was a hard push.
At 5 months post op I flew to Australia for a month. I'm now 7 months and my hip gets better all the time.
The realism is that recovery is a marathon not a sprint. It can take 12 months to be back to normal and you will experience groin pain. Back pain and all manner of aches and pains on your recovery journey.
You will recover. But it will take months not weeks. Don't be discouraged you will get there.
Hi Patsy you sound like you've done incredibly well! I'm not sure I can advice I'm also 56 and now 3 wks post op,and slightly unsure what to do or expect I overdid it it at 2 wks walked too much and suffered afterwards.... and like you decided I had to rest ! I think we are all different and probably all abit worried what we should or should not do. I'd rest Patsy and I'm sure it'll feel better in another week. I've got an uncomfortable pain in my buttock area which hurts when I walk and like you unsure if that is normal or not. It's good to talk to others though, helps to understand it all x
