Thr 6 weeks

Can I lift a 30 lb baby 6 weeks after thr. Daughter is going back to work and I want to look after grandson

I have a 13 lb grandson I'm 11weeks p. o I can lift him out of crib, but if I'm nursing him I have to put him down, get myself up ( still a bit doddery on getting up after sitting ) then lift him up. I don't think I could've done it at 6 wks though.

Good luck

My grandaughter weighs 15lb ( 6 months old) and I find it very tiring to hold her for very long. I am nearly 5 months on from hip op. My partner is always there when I mind her. I just wouldn't trust myself to look after something so precious by myself yet. Also I still get very tired but that may just be old age!!!!

I have to agree with the others; it's probably way too soon. If you have a posterior approach surgery, you'll barely be past your restrictions lifted (and could still have restrictions if it's healing slowly). You might be able to do it but I wouldn't want to HAVE to be able to do it. Even 3 months after the surgery, it will probably be difficult to lift a child that size off the ground (let alone having to do it multiple times per day). I think your surgeon will likely tell you that for the first 3 months, you shouldn't lift anything more than 10 lbs.

On a related note, are you sure about the weight? I haven't checked a growth chart but I think 30 lbs is more like a 1-3 year old.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Hi Diane,

How old is your grandson?    I have an 11-month old granddaughter who probably weighs close to 20 lbs.  I think it will probably be closer to the 3-month time that I woud be able to pick her up.....if then.  It's so hard for me because I love this stage and I like being down on the floor with her and then picking her up and cuddling her.  But I'm trying to be patient.  I have a high chair at my place so she can sit in that and I can sit in a chair next to her.  Then I can play with her, read to her, feed her.          But at 6 weeks, I'm pretty sure I could not take care of her alone.    Frustrating but true!

Good luck. Leslie

Hi Diane,

I agree with the comments -- It might be too early and some restrictions are still in place -

Everything is still so fragile and by lifting something heavy will do damage -

let us know how you are getting on, okay

Hi Mike. He is 8 1/2 months and 25 lbs. Nurse said he is 100% on the percentile chart. His mom and dad are tall and he will/is big boy. I am guessing at weight by time he is 1 yr old. I love him to bits and see him at least 3x a week. I would love to be able to look after him when mom has to go back to work. Was just trying to gauge time line. Of course will ask surgeon

Thanks everyone.

Hi Diane I think it's too soon but I can understand urge to try. Just look after yourself because if you do any harm you won't be able to look after him in the future. Isn't there anyone else who can look after him with your help. Keep me informed and hope it gets sorted for yourself and grandson.

That's a big boy! Definitely ask your surgeon but I think they'll tell you it's too much. Especially for a strong, squirming baby which can be harder than an inanimate object. I'm at about 3 months since my surgery and while I can lift heavy objects (50 lbs+), it's still very hard to lift them from the ground.

Best of luck,

Mike

Hi Diane I'm sorry to say it's just not a good idea.It puts both of you in a compromised position..30 lbs of wifely baby is not good for a 6 week out hip.😞
