Hi
Has anyone with sleep apenea had a THR if so how does that work with Anaesthetics and sedetion putting you to sleep ?
Hi there
I’m 64 female with sleep apnea…21 days post op THR…you will l need to be intubated…to make up for your mask and forced air from your mask…sedation only would be a problem. I needed to be “bagged” each time I needed to be sedated..for other reasons…big problem for the anaethetist and you…
They will undoubtedly recomend general anesthetic for THR as I was…
thanks for the information , i thought i would try it local with no sedation due to the sleep apenea
I had no sedation as I wanted to know what was going on. I was able to talk to the surgeon. I am not sure the anaesthetist was too happy as I think he thought I might be trouble!
how was it without sedation, if you dont mind me asking
It was quite interesting. The banging sounded like the next door neighbours having the builders in. The drilling vibrated my chest a bit, which was a bit weird. I would have liked to see the op. They had put up a big blue curtain though. They showed me the top of the femur they had cut off after they had finished. The surgeon asked me what sort of stitches I wanted, I did not have a clue but opted for dissolvable rather than clips. I suppose I could have listened to music which some people do.
very interesting many thanks
I am sure you will be fine.
I had THR and also have sleep apnea. I had general anesthesia, was intubated with no issues. They managed my breathing with O2 in recovery back to my room where I had my bipap machine. My hospital experience multiple times was to bringing my own bipap to the hospital. I could not fathom being awake during a joint replacement. Doesnt sound at all fun lol! Good luck whichever way you go. Deborah
Thanks for the information but I am going to go with the spinal block with no sedation
As I said worked fine for me and I found it an interesting experience, I just wished I could have seen it too!
Yes it sounds interesting and hopefully I will be allowed to do the same , I have watched the op on you tube , It was amazing what they did , It wasnt my op
still waiting patiently for the consultant
