Hi all
I was due to have my thr on Monday and my pre op bloods have come back showing that im severely anaemic, i had no idea, so they have had to cancel my op, to say i am gutted is an understatement. There are some iron tablets waiting at the chemist for me and i have to see GP on Tuesday.
very sorry to hear this.Poor you.Eat spinach as much as you can, liver & if you can have a stout.Poor you.Lets hope you can get your iron levels sorted regards Amanda h
That is a shame Cherilyn, after you have built yourself up, most of us have been nervous prior to the op. If you do take the tablets be careful on eating too many iron rich foods, if you choose the iron rich foods which Amanda has said there is also molasses which is rich in iron along with loads of other vitamins.
iron tablet’s can take months to raise your levels, they could have put you on a drip if they were that low and got your levels up quickly,
Having my op cancelled was something I dreaded as I was in so much pain. One of the nurses just before my op said why are you anaemic? I did not know I was, anyway they gave me a blood transfusion after the op and a load of iron tablets. You must be more anaemic than I was. Hope you get your op soon.
my friend was also anaemic and they carried on with the op and then they gave her a drip after she was fine, in today’s society its not uncommon to be anaemic anyway
I had a drip a day after the blood transfusion and something happened half way through in that the drip did not drip, they had used the same cannula from the blood transfusion, I have a photo of my hand looking like a football. The doctor on call then spent an hour trying to get the cannula into my other hand. I had so much pain in the end he had to give up. My hands were black and blue for ages after.
I broke down on the phone, too late to cancel everyone’s holidays that they were taking and the pain is horrendous, getting worse every day. Apparently ive been prescribed a 6 week course of iron tablets and no idea of when they will operate. My partners birthday today and im spoiling it for him because im so bloody miserable.
That is so awful. I know the pain I went through before my op. Thinking back I don’t know how I managed to get through it. When are they checking your blood again? If you can get that done and show them it is OK to operate as soon as possible? The trouble is you have to go on at them or you get passed to the back of the queue.
Ive been given a 6 week supply of iron tablets, the nurse was so matter of fact on the phone and didnt have any information for me, ill speak to GP on Tuesday and see if he has any answers.
